?You did get that dog from a shelter, right?? If you have ever found yourself saying (or thinking) these words you may be an Austinite, at least according to ?Sh*t Austinites Say?. Creators Russ Hull and Zane Gordon-Bouzard joined other Austin directors and producers to showcase local talent at this year?s Faces of Austin. Held at the George Washington Carver Museum, this is the first year in which the screening took place in conjunction with SXSW. Faces of Austin seeks to promote local filmmakers and capture the essence of our great city. Therefore, they select films which reflect all aspects of Austin culture, from music videos to promotionals for non-profits to collections of photographs of the city. All films must be about Austin or Austin?s people and showcase an aspect of our city?s voice.
Sunday?s screening showed 14 films all created by local talent and all exploring Austin culture in a unique way. A number of the
short films focused on non-profits both by presenting their ideals and showing firsthand their impact on the community. ?This Austin Life?, one of my personal favorites, was about the Multicultural Refugee Coalition which works with refugees in the Austin area. Both people working for the MRC and those who had gone through the program talked about how important it is to have a support structure when you are a refugee in America. ?Grow. Share. Prepare.? delved into the inner-workings of the Sustainable Food Center in Austin. While they are most well known for their Farmer?s Market, they also participate in a number of awareness and social activities including community garden programs and healthy cooking and nutrition classes. ?The Wood Sculptor? and ?Carlyn Ray: Glassblower? were very different takes on Austin. They both focused on local artists who are contributing to Austin?s creative presence through their work.
Following the screening, there was a short Q&A with the directors who were present. As part of promoting the films and local filmmakers, all Faces of Austin shorts will be available online after March 25th. Visit their website to watch the films and learn about Faces of Austin.
