New material cuts energy costs of separating gas for plastics and fuels

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? A new type of hybrid material developed at the University of California, Berkeley, could help oil and chemical companies save energy and money -- and lower their environmental impacts -- by eliminating an energy-intensive gas-separation process.

Today, to separate hydrocarbon gas mixtures into the pure chemicals needed to make plastics, refineries "crack" crude oil at high temperatures -- 500 to 600 degrees Celsius -- to break complex hydrocarbons into lighter, short-chain molecules. They then chill the gaseous mixture to 100 degrees below zero Celsius to liquefy and divide the gases into those destined for plastics and those used as fuel for home heating and cooking.

"Cryogenic distillation at low temperatures and high pressures is among the most energy-intensive separations carried out at large scale in the chemical industry, and an environmental problem because of its contributions to global climate change," said Jeffrey Long, a professor of chemistry at the UC Berkeley and a faculty researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Long and his UC Berkeley colleagues now have created an iron-based material -- a metal-organic framework, or MOF -- that can be used at high temperatures to efficiently separate these gases while eliminating the chilling.

"You need a very pure feedstock of propylene and ethylene for making some of the most important polymers, such as polypropylene, for consumer products, but refineries dump a lot of energy into bringing the high temperature gases down to cryogenic temperatures," Long said. "If you can do the separation at higher temperatures, you can save that energy. This material is really good at doing these particular separations."

"The research conducted by the Long group exemplifies the potential of MOF-based materials relative to olefin/paraffin separations," said chemist Peter Nickias, a Dow Fellow at Dow Chemical Company in Michigan who was not involved in the research. "More specifically, the ability of the reported iron-based MOF to separate a variety of unsaturated hydrocarbons from saturated species not only shows the versatility of the iron-MOF system, but also clearly reveals the potential of MOFs as alternative adsorbents."

In the chemical industry, ethylene and propylene are called olefins, while methane, ethane and propane are called paraffins.

Long and his colleagues at UC Berkeley, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Md., and the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands report their findings in the March 30 issue of Science.

MOFs for natural gas purification

The iron-MOF is also good at purifying natural gas, which is a mixture of methane and various types of hydrocarbon impurities that have to be removed before the gas can be used by consumers. These impurities can then be sold for other uses, Long said.

"MOF compounds have a very high surface area, which provides lots of area a gas mixture can interact with, and that surface contains iron atoms that can bind the unsaturated hydrocarbons," Long said. "Acetylene, ethylene and propylene will stick to those iron sites much more strongly than will ethane, propane or methane. That is the basis for the separation."

Nickias noted that increased supplies of natural gas from shale have provided more opportunity to extract and use ethylene and propylene from natural gas, and a variety of materials and approaches are being examined to cut energy use during the refining and purification of olefins.

"Significant energy savings could be achieved if a non-distillation separation could be implemented, or more realistically, the load on a cryogenic distillation unit can be reduced via upstream modifications to the process," Nickias said.

Petroleum refined for the chemical industry is typically a mix of hydrocarbons, primarily two-carbon molecules -- ethane, ethylene and acetylene -- and three-carbon chains -- propane and propylene. Cryogenic distillation separates these compounds -- all of them gases at room temperature -- by liquefying them at low temperatures and high pressure, which causes them to separate by density. Ethylene and propylene go into plastic polymers, while ethane and propane are typically used for fuel.

The researchers found that when pumping a gas mixture through the iron-based MOF (Fe-MOF-74), the propylene and ethylene bind to the iron embedded in the matrix, letting pure propane and ethane through. In their trials, the ethane coming out was 99.0 to 99.5 percent pure. The propane output was close to 100 percent pure, since no propylene could be detected.

After the ethane and propane emerge, the MOF can be heated or depressurized to release ethylene and propylene pure enough for making polymers.

"Once you saturate the material ? with ethylene, for example -- you shut off the valve, stop the feed gas, warm up the absorber unit and the ethylene would come out in pure form as a gas," Long said.

MOFs are like packed soda straws

Through a microscope, Fe-MOF-74 looks like a collection of narrow tubes packed together like drinking straws in a box. Each tube is made of organic materials and six long strips of iron, which run lengthwise along the tube. Analysis by Long's colleagues at the NIST Center for Neutron Research showed that different light hydrocarbons have varied levels of attraction to the tubes' iron. By passing a mixed-hydrocarbon gas through a series of filters made of the tubes, the hydrocarbon with the strongest affinity can be removed in the first filter layer, the next strongest in the second layer, and so forth.

"It works well at 45 degrees Celsius, which is closer to the temperature of hydrocarbons at some points in the distillation process," said coauthor Wendy Queen, a postdoctoral fellow at NIST who worked for six months in Long's UC Berkeley lab. "The upshot is that if we can bring the MOF to market as a filtration device, the energy-intensive cooling step potentially can be eliminated. We are now trying out metals other than iron in the MOF in case we can find one that works even better."

Long and his laboratory colleagues are developing iron-based MOFs to capture carbon from smokestack emissions and sequester it to prevent its release into the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas. Similar MOFs, which can be made with different pore sizes and metals, turn out to be ideal for separating different types of hydrocarbons and for storing hydrogen and methane for use as fuel.

Long's other colleagues are UC Berkeley graduate students Eric D. Bloch and Joseph M. Zadrozny; Rajamani Krishna of the Van't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences at the University of Amsterdam; and Craig M. Brown of NIST and The Bragg Institute at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation in Menai, New South Wales.

The research is part of the Center for Gas Separations Relevant to Clean Energy Technologies, an Energy Frontier Research Center funded by the Department of Energy that focuses primarily on creating novel materials for capturing and storing carbon dioxide.

Lost in the NFL?s strong reaction to the discovery of a three-year bounty system in New Orleans is the fact that the league initially investigated allegations of a cash-for-cripplings program in 2010, after the Saints won Super Bowl XLIV.

Nothing was found.? But how hard did the league really look?

The March 2 confidential report from NFL Security claims that the league?s in-house police force ?conducted detailed interviews? of Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, Saints assistant head coach/linebackers coach Joe Vitt, and Saints defensive end Anthony Hargrove, and that they each ?categorically denied? any knowledge of a bounty program.

So how detailed was the questioning?? And how hot was the light that was applied to the witnesses?

If the men were grilled, they?re each great liars ? or the members of NFL Security assigned to the case are crappy investigators.? If Williams, Vitt, and Hargrove were faced instead with perfunctory ?Is there a bounty system??-type questions, there would have been no way to spot the kind of subtle inconsistencies or ?tells? that would pluck at the instincts of the former law-enforcement personnel who end up working for NFL Security.

My own instincts suggest it?s the latter, and that the NFL simply didn?t want to uncover in the weeks after Super Bowl XLIV evidence that would have called into question the validity of the Saints? Super Bowl-winning season.? Supporting this conclusion is the fact that NFL Security interviewed only Williams, Vitt, and Hargrove.? Why not interview head coach Sean Payton?? Why not interview the rest of the defensive staff?? Why not interview extensively every player from the team?s defense, using the various tricks of the trade aimed at manipulating the weak minded in order to get to the truth?? Why not review emails and other potentially relevant records?

There was plenty of evidence to suspect that something was amiss.? In the bye week before Super Bowl XLIV, Williams brazenly suggested that the Saints didn?t care about taking a 15-yard penalty if it meant knocking Colts quarterback Peyton Manning out of the game.

?When you put too much of that type of worry on a warrior?s mind, he doesn?t play all out,? Williams said.? ?If it happens, it happens.? And the only thing you?d like for me to say is that if it happens you hope he doesn?t get back up and play again.?? (Williams? words prompted Payton to serve the defensive coordinator peanut butter, crackers, and sand in the days preceding Super Bowl XLIV.)

Williams? comments about Manning should have been enough to prompt a zealous investigator to request from the Saints a copy of a transcript of every 2009 media session from Williams.? If such a request had been made, the investigators would have seen this troubling remark from Williams regarding the plan for defending Panthers receiver Steve Smith:? ?The thing that I think he does is the best is that for a little guy, when the ball goes up in the air, he plays like a 6-10 center; he goes and gets it.? What you have to do is to turn his little body over so that when he does get it, he lands on his head and he doesn?t come back in for a while.?

The mere existence of such a nonchalant attitude toward inflicting injury as a means for achieving strategic objectives should have been enough to trigger a scorched-earth investigation in 2010, months before someone blew the whistle and forced the NFL to be far more aggressive.

The two possible explanations for the failure to engage in a more thorough investigation in 2010 are:? (1) incompetence; and (2) a deliberate reluctance to publicly identify one of the 32 franchises as being a cheater.

We?ve seen it many times when it comes to tampering.? The league looks the other way, either because the league doesn?t want to create the impression that teams are cheating ? or because the league office doesn?t want to alienate any of the franchises who ultimately determine who does, and who doesn?t, work at the league office.

In this case, it can be argued that the NFL came down extra hard on the Saints now not because they had a bounty system for three years but because the NFL gave them an opening to get away with one year of it, and the Saints were too stupid and/or arrogant to realize that they should stop.

Regardless, if the Saints had merely stopped doing it after the NFL showed up and gave short shrift to the investigation in 2010, no one would have ever known the difference and the NFL wouldn?t be dealing with a major blow to its image and the league now wouldn?t be forced to determine how deep it wants to dig into the rabbit hole and Congress wouldn?t be poised to do the digging for the league.

So it?s fair to conclude that the league didn?t want to discovery the bounty system in 2010.? And that the league hoped that the Saints were smart enough to stop.

After all, the punishment ultimately dispensed could end up hurting the league a lot more than it ever hurts the Saints.

International Motorola RAZR update adds new smart actions, battery and camera tweaks

A new software update is available for the Motorola RAZR (that's the international GSM version of the Droid RAZR), according to Moto Europe's Facebook page. The new firmware is currently available in the UK, Italy, France and Spain. It's still based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread rather than ICS (although a leaked ICS build is available for the international model), RAZR users do have a handful of new features to look forward to.

New sample rules for Moto's Smart Actions feature have been added, including Auto Text and VIP Caller Mode. And the manufacturer also claims improved camera performance and increased battery life in this latest software update.

If you're rocking a GSM Motorola RAZR, head to Settings > About Phone > System Updates to grab the latest firmware update.

Ad attacks Obama on gas prices with faulty logic

WASHINGTON (AP) ? TITLE: "Deflect"

LENGTH: 30 seconds.

AIRING: Nationwide on cable TV and on local stations in Albuquerque, N.M.; Columbus, Ohio, and Las Vegas.

KEY IMAGES: The ad sponsored by Crossroads GPS, the nonprofit arm of a Republican super PAC, accuses President Barack Obama of pursuing "bad energy policies" that are driving up gasoline prices. Crossroads GPS is the sister group of American Crossroads, a super PAC that has promised to raise millions this election to defeat Obama.

The ad opens with a comparison of gasoline prices just before Obama took office ? $1.83 per gallon on Jan. 19, 2009 ? and the price three years into his presidency, $3.74 on March 12, 2012.

"Then and now," the narrator says. "The difference: President Obama's administration restricted oil production in the Gulf, limited development of American oil shale, and Obama personally lobbied to kill a pipeline bringing oil from Canada."

A headline appears on the screen: "As gasoline prices rise, president's ratings fall."

The ad cuts to the voice of National Journal's Major Garrett during a March 12, 2012, appearance on CBS' "This Morning", saying, "At the White House for three weeks the word has been 'deflector shield' on gas prices. Put up the deflector shield."

The narrator urges viewers to call and complain to the White House, "Tell President Obama bad energy policies mean energy prices we can't afford."

ANALYSIS: Republicans looking ahead to the fall election are seeking to tap into voter frustration over rising prices at the gas pump by blaming Obama for policies they claim are restricting U.S. oil production and pushing up energy costs. Frustration over rising gas prices promises to be front and center in the debate.

Gasoline hit a national average of $3.86 a gallon Wednesday. Obama has said drilling for new oil alone won't solve the nation's energy woes. Republican front-runner Mitt Romney has called on Obama to fire his top energy advisers, calling them the "gas hike trio."

The ad was timed to appear as Obama traveled this week to Nevada, New Mexico and Oklahoma for a trip to answer critics of his energy policies.

An Associated Press statistical analysis of 36 years of monthly, inflation-adjusted gasoline prices and U.S. domestic oil production contradicts the ad's key claim. AP's analysis showed no statistical correlation between how much oil comes out of U.S. wells and the price at the pump.

In other words, more oil production in the United States can't promise lower prices. Sometimes prices rise as U.S. production ramps up, which is what's happened over the past three years.

That's because oil is a global commodity, and U.S. production has only a tiny influence on supply. Factors far beyond the control of a nation or a president dictate the price of gasoline.

When you put the inflation-adjusted price of gas on the same chart as U.S. oil production since 1976, the numbers sometimes go in the same direction, sometimes in opposite directions. If drilling for more oil meant lower prices, the lines on the chart would consistently go in opposite directions. A basic statistical measure of correlation found no link between the two, and outside statistical experts confirmed those calculations.

The AP analysis used Energy Department figures for regular unleaded gas prices adjusted for inflation to 2012 dollars, oil production and oil demand.

Vaccine for skin cancer could be on the anvil | Hamara Health

Washington, Mar 20 (ANI): A newly created vaccine has raised hopes of finding a cure for skin cancer.

The vaccine, created by scientists, succeeded in eradicating skin cancer in some mice.

Results from early studies have shown that 60 percent of mice with melanoma were cured in fewer than three months with minimal side effects, thanks to the treatment.

The vaccine was made up of a combination of human DNA from melanoma cells and a cousin of the rabies virus called vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). Known as cancer immunotherapy, the treatment used the genetically engineered version of VSV, which is symptomless in humans, to help target the cancer genes in the body.

Cancer can hide from a normal immune system, but the introduction of an outside virus can help highlight the cancer cells. When the proteins from melanoma skin cancer cells were expressed through the VSV, the immune system was then able to ?see? the cancer cells and create T-cell antibodies to target and destroy them.

The new technique may help identify an entirely new set of genes that can stimulate the immune system to reject cancer cells, according to researchers.

"One of the major problems in patients with melanoma and several other types of cancer is that cancer grows over long periods of time, and the immune system becomes subverted by the cancer ? so it no longer sees cancer cells as something that should be rejected or fought off," Fox News quoted Dr Richard Vile, a Mayo Clinic researcher in the Department of Molecular Medicine and a co-author of the study, as saying.

"In contrast, with viruses or bacteria, the immune system works very well against invading agents ? so by associating the proteins from cancer cells and expressing them through viruses, the immune system sees the cancer cells as foreign and invading pathogens," he said.

He added that the treatment essentially re-educated the immune system, rather than altering the existing cancer in the body.

"We didn?t have to get to the tumour itself? One of the attractions of using the immune system is that it can patrol the whole body to find metastatic disease in the liver, lung and other areas, as opposed to merely being a local therapy," he said.

The treatment even worked in mice with systemic disease, where the cancer had spread throughout their bodies, according to Vile.

The crew of Frozen Planet knew that shooting with regular equipment probably wouldn't cut it at the extreme temperatures at the poles, and they couldn't risk malfunction because of the remote filming locations. "If you call and say, 'This piece of kit's broken, can you send me another?' " says producer Mark Linfield, "it'll be 'No,' or, 'Yeah, just hang around for three weeks.' " So the crew tested all of its equipment in a house-size freezer. "We were surrounded by frozen baguettes and bits of meat," Linfield says. "We discovered that lots of our cables for attaching monitors to cameras would go stiff and snap, and the LCD screens would go pale?you just couldn't see anything. And things with oil-based lubricants would stiffen so much you couldn't pan the tripod head." Armed with that information, the filmmakers sought out equipment that could withstand the temperatures: "We replaced the cables with what's called Arctic cabling, which remains flexible at low temperatures, and we sourced monitors that we knew wouldn't let us down in the field."
