DirecTV HR34 DVR 'Genie' recommendations and autorecording get previewed ahead of fall launch

DirecTV HR34 DVR 'Genie' recommendations and autorecording get previewed ahead of fall launch

DirecTV paired its HD interface with the five tuner, RVU ready HR34 Home Media Center DVR back in March, so what will it do next to take advantage of the multiroom boxes with five tuners and massive hard drives? The answer is Genie, a new feature / rebranding that should be very familiar to TiVo users, since its aim is to find other shows you might be interested in and store them on the DVR without being prompted. The folks at Solid Signal and DBSTalk have had an early preview of the fall software update that will enable it, and have both posted hands-on impressions.

Once the user enables the feature, after a few hours it begins episodes of shows similar to the ones they already watch and recording them automatically. The feature uses hard drive space that's already reserved for DirecTV's video on-demand (so user accessible recording space is not impacted) and works in selections available from VOD. Watching a program at your leisure VOD-style, setting up a series recording for a new favorite or blasting it from your drive is just a click of the remote away on the DVR or one of its multiroom extenders. Helping viewers discover new content is a field suddenly filled with competition, from the social networking based to Dish Network's Hopper that records everything on primetime network TV and even filters out commercials. That Genie can let you watch already recorded episodes right away and pull from any broadcasts its finds may give it a leg up, but so far we haven't seen recommendation systems good enough to promote switching from one service to another. Hit the source links for more details on how it all works, along with a video preview, also embedded after the break.

Getting Slower And Slower: How Slow Can You Go?

Before we go slow, let's go fast, so fast you can't go any faster. That would be light in a vacuum, traveling at 670 million miles per hour ...

Light, of course, can slow down. When light passes through water, it loses speed. A diamond is an even better speed bump. It can slow a beam of light by 40 percent.

But moving on, you and I are going pretty fast right now, though we don't notice. The planet we're on is zipping around the sun at 66,000-plus miles per hour ...

You'd think there would be wind whipping through our hair, but no, we're cocooned by the Earth's atmosphere, so we have no easy way to sense our motion. We could, of course, leave the Earth and watch our planet from a distance, but to do that, we'd have to kick off the surface, and that takes a lot of speed. ...

In fact, getting away from something often requires a speedy ejection. Take sneezing. You breathe in an irritant, say, a prickly dust particle, your body tenses and ...

... out it flies ? at up to 104 mph.

You can't run away from something that fast. The fastest runners we have ? at full sprint ? don't do much better than ...

... 26, 27 mph. That's how fast Jamaican champion Usain Bolt can go. Most of us are content to waddle along at a much slower pace.

... which still makes us much faster than the slowest waddlers, who don't really waddle; snails seem to slide on their own mucus, which makes them icons of slow-ocity. ...

By now we're getting down to truly slow, slow-motion speeds that describe the growth rate of bamboo (1.3 x 10-6 miles per hour), or slower still, this is the average growth rate of a child ? expressed in miles per hour.

We can go even slower. The moon is drifting away from the Earth. Three billion years ago it was bigger in our sky, but its retreat is so delicate, you'd never know it was moving unless you painstakingly measure the widening distance.

And even slower than that ? as this is as slow as I'm going to go in this post, because you have to stop somewhere ? is what's happening at the ends of your fingers and toes. We know nails grow. But in miles per hour, they achieve a kind of Gold Medal of Sluggishness.

But before I conclude, to show you that we're nowhere near the slowest of the slows, I want you to imagine a pile of uranium atoms (think of lots of electrons spinning around a big, fat nucleus). Now, close your eyes, and keep them shut for 4.47 billion years. When you open them, half those atoms will no longer be uranium. They will have decayed into something else. Their rate of decay, their "half life," 4.47 billion years, is roughly the age of our planet. Talk about slow. That's really slow.

I got these numbers from a chart labeled "Speed" in David Blatner's new book, Spectrums. I know I've been cribbing off of Blatner a lot this week, but that's because his little volume about scaling is so provocative. He just gets me thinking.

PFT: Eagles' Maclin out this week vs. Cards

Da'Norris Searcy, Kevin BossAP

We cover all of the biggest injury stories throughout the day on Friday, but feel free to use this as a one-stop shop to catch up on those posts and any other names worth mentioning that we?ll throw in here every Friday.

Rams at Bears

The big story here is the running backs. Steven Jackson is questionable after missing practice all week because of a groin injury and Matt Forte will miss the game after spraining his ankle in the Bears? loss to the Packers. Rams defensive tackle Michael Brockers is out of his walking boot, but won?t play Sunday. Tackle Rodger Saffold is also out for St. Louis.

Bills at Browns

The Browns will be without linebacker James-Michael Johnson and tight end Alex Smith, while kick returner Josh Cribbs is questionable. For Buffalo, safety Jairus Byrd and linebacker Nick Barnett are both expected to play despite missing practice all week.

Buccaneers at Cowboys

The Cowboys ruled out defensive tackle Jay Ratliff for the third straight game. Defensive end Kenyon Coleman is also out and safety Gerald Sensabaugh isn?t likely to play because of a calf injury. The Buccaneers ruled out cornerback Anthony Gaitor, but are otherwise light on injuries.

Jaguars at Colts

Colts wide receiver Austin Collie practiced all week, but his status is contingent on a meeting with doctors Saturday. Linebacker Pat Angerer and guard Joe Reitz are out while linebacker Dwight Freeney is questionable after missing Week Two with an ankle injury. Linebacker Daryl Smith, defensive end George Selvie and guard Eben Britton are all out for the Jaguars, while running back Rashad Jennings is doubtful with the knee injury that kept him out last week.

Jets at Dolphins

Cornerback Darrelle Revis is probable, but Rex Ryan said the Jets are going to be without fullback John Conner and linebacker Bryan Thomas. Tight end Dustin Keller is questionable with a hamstring injury that forced him to miss the loss to the Steelers. Dolphins running back Daniel Thomas is probable after missing last week with a concussion while defensive lineman Tony McDaniel is out.

49ers at Vikings

Wide receiver Ted Ginn and running back Brandon Jacobs are both questionable, just as they were before being held out of last week?s game with the Lions. Linebacker Erin Henderson won?t play for the Vikings due to a concussion.

Chiefs at Saints

The Chiefs will be without tight end Kevin Boss and have several key players ? safety Kendrick Lewis, defensive tackle Anthony Toribio, guard Ryan Lilja and wide receiver Dexter McCluster among them ? listed as questionable. Saints wide receiver Marques Colston is questionable with a foot injury, although he?s expected to play unless he looks bad in pregame.

Lions at Titans

Safety Louis Delmas is out again for the Lions, but cornerbacks Bill Bentley and Chris Houston are both probable to make their returns. Another corner, Jacob Lacey, is questionable and tight end Tony Scheffler is doubtful. The Titans will be without linebacker Colin McCarthy and running back Javon Ringer is questionable after missing the first two games.

Bengals at Redskins

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan doesn?t expect WR Pierre Gar?on to play, but safety Brandon Meriweather could make his 2012 debut after being listed as questionable. Bengals cornerback Leon Hall missed practice the last two days and is questionable. Defensive end Carlos Dunlap and running back Bernard Scott should both be in the lineup for the first time in the regular season.

Eagles at Cardinals

Cardinals quarterback John Skelton has returned to practice, but he?s questionable and not likely to see action. Tight end Todd Heap and safety Adrian Wilson are also questionable. The Eagles will play without wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and tackle King Dunlap.

Falcons at Chargers

The Chargers should get running back Ryan Mathews and tight end Antonio Gates back after they both missed the win over the Titans. Cornerback Christopher Owens is out for the Falcons and linebacker Sean Weatherspoon is questionable.

Texans at Broncos

Broncos guard Chris Kuper is the only player ruled out for either team. Several players are probable on both sides, which means that both teams should be at or right next to full strength come kickoff.

Steelers at Raiders

Safety Troy Polamalu, running back Rashard Mendenhall and linebacker James Harrison are all out again for the Steelers. Tackle Mike Adams is questionable after missing practice all week. The Raiders ruled out tackle Khalif Barnes and cornerback Shawntae Spencer. Linebacker Rolando McClain is questionable as a result of a concussion.

Patriots at Ravens

Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has been ruled out after hurting his ankle a few plays into the loss to the Cardinals and figures to miss several more games. Defensive tackle Justin Francis will miss the game as well. Tackle Sebastian Vollmer, guard Logan Mankins and wide receiver Brandon Lloyd are among 10 Patriots listed as questionable for Sunday night. Tackle Jah Reid is doubtful while the rest of the Ravens appear healthy ahead of Sunday?s final matchup.

JK Rowling's former Edinburgh home for sale

LONDON (AP) ? J.K. Rowling's former home can be yours ? if you can conjure up 2.25 million pounds ($3.7 million).

The eight-bedroom Victorian house in Edinburgh belonging to the Harry Potter author is listed for sale on the website of real estate agents Rettie.

It's described as "an exceptional detached family house standing within a large yet discreet landscaped and walled garden" in one of the city's most exclusive areas.

Rowling lived there with her husband and three children while she wrote several volumes in her seven-book adventure series about the boy wizard. Rowling, whose books have sold 450 million copies, now owns another house in the city, as well as other properties in Scotland and London.

She is due to release her first book for adults, "The Casual Vacancy," next week.
