Biggest Loser: Portly Taft helped usher in modern obesity care

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Way before Weight Watchers or "The Biggest Loser," a president known for his girth was helping to usher in a modern approach to treating obesity.

Got a nagging doctor? The 27th president, William H. Taft did, way back in the early 1900s. A medical historian has analyzed letters between the two, complete with food diaries and daily weigh-ins surely recognizable to many of today's dieters.

Have a problem with yo-yo dieting and weight gain? Yep, Taft did, too.

Monday's report offers a rare peek at the history of obesity, through the experiences of one of the first American public figures to struggle openly with weight — and how a doctor aided in an era when physician treatment of obesity was just emerging.

Taft's "rise to political power coincided with this change in medical thinking, which led to the first celebrity weight loss patient," said Deborah Levine, an assistant professor at Rhode Island's Providence College. Her report, part of research for a book about the course of obesity in the U.S., appears Monday in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

Sports fans might recognize Taft as the latest addition to the Washington Nationals' racing presidents. History buffs know he's the only president-turned-Supreme Court chief justice. But he's also remembered as the president whose weight, at times well over 300 pounds, made headlines.

Taft hired British dieting expert Nathaniel Yorke-Davies in 1905, four years before becoming president. Then 314 pounds, Taft was worried about heartburn and other health problems — he was famously fatigued, presumably from obesity-caused sleep apnea — and possibly also about his career, Levine wrote.

The candid exchanges between doctor and patient highlight the ups and down of weight loss.

"I feel in excellent condition. I used to suffer from acidity of stomach, and I suppose that was due to overloading it," Taft wrote at one point.

Dusting off those archives is important to remind people that obesity isn't some scary new 21st-century problem, said Dr. Scott Kahan of George Washington University and the STOP Obesity Alliance.

Yes, obesity rates have surged to epidemic levels over the past few decades. But waistlines actually began to expand in the mid-19th century, as food became easier to cultivate and distribute, Kahan said. Diet books and pamphlets began flourishing. Where women's corsets offered some tightening, Levine says obesity belts were developed for men.

Even then it was clear there was no quick fix. And if you think high-calorie restaurant food is only a recent problem, well, Taft wrote a relative that all the formal dinners required in politics sabotaged his efforts. In his first year with Yorke-Davies, Taft lost 59 pounds, Levine found, only to regain it. Only after leaving the White House did Taft shed significant weight and keep it off, with help from a different doctor, she noted.

"It's really, really hard to lose weight and keep it off. If it wasn't, we'd all be thin," said Kahan, who was struck by similarities between Taft's struggles and many weight-loss efforts today. "We recognize this problem as a disease, and yet at the same time we expect people to just be able to manage it once we write down a diet for them."

Today, doctors know that for someone who's obese, shedding even 5 percent to 10 percent of the original weight can improve health, he added.

Yorke-Davies had written a popular diet book, "Foods for the Fat: A Treatise on Corpulency and a Dietary for its Cure." He and Taft had a long-distance relationship. The doctor mailed a three-page list of allowed and forbidden foods — heavy on lean meats and reducing sugar, almost a prelude to the Atkins diet. Taft was to weigh himself daily and mail a weekly report.

Levine compared the handwritten weigh-ins and the typed letters to the doctor. Sometimes Taft cheated.

And Yorke-Davies nagged, politely, but a lot. One month the doctor fussed that Taft's weight loss was only 9 pounds, not the intended 14. When Taft slacked off, the doctor wrote that he'd heard "you are much stouter than you were a few months ago."

Levine concludes that some core practices — close doctor-patient communication, tracking weight and food diaries — still are in use.

The challenge is to find a balance between helpful advice and nagging, said Dr. Mladen Golubic of the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute. Some of the clinic's patients opt for daily, personalized emails to track their progress.

"You don't want to be harsh," Golubic said. But "you need to nudge them."

BFI Rolls Out International Strategy

LONDON -- The British Film Institute has revealed details of its International strategy, which includes a pilot program providing P&A support for U.S. releases of selected U.K. films in 2014 and an increase in funding to support inward investment, film export and co-production.

The BFI has pledged $2.4 million of its lottery funding annually to fuel its international strategy "to make effective interventions" and is working closely with the government's department for culture, media and sport, U.K. Trade & Investment (UKTI) and the British Council, along with public and private partners, to maximize the support available for U.K. film.

Developing an international strategy under the watchful eye of BFI head of international Isabel Davis is a "key aim of the BFI’s five year plan, Film Forever."

STORY: BFI London Film Festival Kicks Off With 'Captain Phillips'

As the U.K.'s biggest and most prominent movie agency and the gatekeeper of millions of dollars in lottery-fueled investment cash pools, the BFI is looking beyond borders to drive U.K. economic growth and enhance the global reputation of British film.

Davis has consulted widely with government officials and partners throughout the U.K. and identified audiovisual policy, co-production, cultural exchange, export, inward investment and skills as being key to the British film economy.

The strategy is underpinned by research undertaken by Olsberg SPI on behalf of the BFI, with China, Brazil and the U.S. "identified as priority territories" because of clear evidence that "they offer the greatest opportunities for growth and for public intervention through the BFI and its partners to help unlock opportunities for mutually beneficial collaboration."

The international strategy, titled The Wide Angle: The BFI’s International Strategy, was presented to an audience of film professionals Tuesday as part of the BFI London Film Festival’s industry program.

BFI head of international Isabel Davis said: “Film is a truly global business, and U.K. film is riding high on the world stage following a hugely successful outing for British films and filmmakers in the autumn festivals and with the U.K.'s world-class crews, talent, facilities, studios and infrastructure, coupled with our attractive film tax relief, continuing to entice film production from around the world. The aim of this strategy is to capitalize on that success and stimulate growth in the years ahead. Partnership is at the heart of this strategy, and we look forward to working in close collaboration with our partners in government and industry to maximize the economic growth and cultural reach of U.K. film.”

The strategy means the budget of the BFI Film Export Fund, which helps spotlight U.K. films in key international markets, has increased to $440,000 per year.

In 2014, the BFI will pilot a program to provide an undisclosed amount of P&A support for the U.S. rollouts of U.K. films to help sales companies "make U.K. films even more attractive at key international markets and ensure U.K. films are able to achieve better audience reach in the U.S."

Additionally, the BFI is committed to ensuring a strong U.K. presence at key international festivals and markets such as the EFM in Berlin, FILMART Hong Kong, the Marche du Film in Cannes and during the Toronto Film Festival under the international umbrella brand, We Are U.K Film.

The BFI International fund has also committed $320,000 per year, subject to approval, to support the British Film Commission, to attract film investment from the U.S.

This is in addition to around $639,000 Grant-in-Aid (GIA) funding from the BFI.

There will also be "up to" $1.6 million each year for minority co-productions, giving U.K. producers and talent "enhanced opportunities" to collaborate with filmmakers.

The BFI continues to review U.K. membership in Eurimages and the impact of the U.K. film tax relief on co-production.

MIPCOM: Turkish Drama 'The End' Gets Country's First U.S. Format Deal

In a sign of just how fevered -- and far-ranging -- the search for new scripted series has become, Fox has just inked a deal to acquire re-versioning rights to a drama from Turkey, the latest territory to make its mark on the international TV scene. The deal came to light on the Croisette on the last morning of the four-day Mipcom TV market in Cannes.

The End will be the first Turkish drama series to hit American screens in a deal between Sander Moses Productions and Fox with 20th TV producing. Eccho Rights represents the hit scripted format.

Lined up to work on the show are Peter Horton as director and executive producer, and Michael Cooney as writer.

Fredrik af Malmborg, managing director at Eccho Rights, said that "the success of the ready made and now the way the scripted format is traveling testifies to the great ideas and inventiveness of the script."

Eccho Rights recently sold the Turkish drama as a format to Russia as well as licensing The End as a ready-made to over 40 countries including SVT in Sweden.

This last deal led to the first-ever subtitled Turkish drama to air on Western European screens.

The End comes from Turkish drama producer Ay Yapim and tells the story of a happy couple living in Istanbul. When the plane the husband is traveling on crashes, the wife is sent into a spiral of grief that stops when she finds out he never boarded the plane. She then has to find her way through a web of lies to find her husband.

GSW accepts Deutsche Wohnen offer, group to raise dividend

By Peter Dinkloh

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German Real estate company GSW said on Monday it would recommend its shareholders accept Deutsche Wohnen's takeover offer, taking the 1.7 billion euro bid ($2.3 billion) one step closer to a possible completion.

The proposed all-share deal would push Deutsche Wohnen closer to the top five European real estate firms by market value by growing its portfolio in Berlin's booming rental market, where it is tapping increasing interest from international investors.

"We consider the business combination as a convincing opportunity to pool the strengths of the two companies," GSW said in a statement.

"The Management Board and the Supervisory Board consider the exchange ratio of ... shares ... as fair from a financial point of view," it said, adding that investment bank Goldman Sachs had agreed to that assessment in a so-called "fairness opinion".

Both companies are also trying to persuade investors into accepting the offer of 51 Deutsche Wohnen shares for every 20 shares in GSW, which runs until midnight on October 30, by promising to raise dividends from 2015.

The payout ratio would rise to about 60 percent of funds from operations (FFO) from 50 percent, starting with the dividend to be paid for next year, the companies said.

That takes the payout ratio closer to the 65 percent of FFO GSW is aiming for, but remains below the 70 percent planned by Deutsche Annington , Germany's largest residential real-estate company.

The enlarged group, which already has antitrust clearance for the combination, would continue its growth strategy in Berlin and would also seek access to other dynamic regions, GSW said, without being more specific.

Deutsche Wohnen Chief Executive Michael Zahn will remain in his position, while GSW Co-CEO Andreas Segal will become chief financial officer at Deutsche Wohnen.

The acquisition could be completed before the end of the year if enough shareholders tender their shares, Deutsche Wohnen said and would be Germany's second-biggest residential real estate deal since Whitehall bought LEG Immobilien for 3.4 billion euros in 2008.

The tie-up would increase Deutsche Wohnen's portfolio of flats by around 63 percent to more than 147,000, pushing it into second place behind market leader Deutsche Annington with 179,000 apartments.

Florida counts on experimental trees to fight orange plague

By Barbara Liston

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - Florida citrus researchers are preparing to launch a large-scale test of new disease-tolerant orange tree rootstock in what one likened to a leap of faith to save the $9 billion state industry from a deadly citrus greening "tsunami."

Florida, second to Brazil in global orange juice production, has lost billions of dollars in revenues from the disease that is killing orange trees faster than they can be replaced.

Citrus greening, which makes the fruit unpalatable and kills trees within a few years, has helped put state orange production on a downward trend.

The bacteria threatens an industry that employs more than 76,000 full- and part-time workers and provides over 90 percent of orange juice consumed in the United States.

So desperate are growers to find a solution to the greening crisis that they are prepared to start planting the new rootstock before testing on it is even completed, researchers say.

"This is a huge, risky experiment. It illustrates the desperate situation the Florida citrus industry feels that it is in," said Fred Gmitter, a University of Florida horticulture professor who is part of the test team.

Plant pathologists believe citrus greening, caused by a bacterium spread by the Asian Citrus Psyllid, infects as much as 70 percent of Florida's citrus trees, according to researcher Jude Grosser.

While searching generally for new rootstocks that would allow trees to thrive despite poor soil, cold temperatures or other stresses, Gmitter and Grosser discovered orange trees grafted onto certain test rootstock planted within large groves survived infection with greening.

Under normal circumstances, Gmitter said, researchers would conduct further tests before jumping into a large trial.

LIFE AND DEATH FOR THE GROVES

Gmitter said the greening disease sweeping Florida prompted the Citrus Research Development Foundation to fund the immediate implementation of promising solutions, including the planting of several thousand of the new rootstock around the state.

"Growers have come to see our small trials with these trees where it looks really good. It's like black and white, life and death," Gmitter said, adding, "I'd say it's very likely these rootstocks are going to make a difference."

Citrus greening was first discovered in Florida in 2005, the year a parade of hurricanes criss-crossed the groves.

The fast-spreading disease has cost Florida's economy an estimated $4.5 billion in lost revenues since 2006, according to the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences. Greening was detected in 2012 in California.

Total acreage of citrus groves and the number of citrus trees in Florida in 2013 were down for the ninth consecutive survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Damage from hurricanes, cold weather and other diseases also contributed to the decline. Total citrus production for the 2012-13 season declined 9 percent and the on-tree value of the fruit was down 32 percent compared with the previous season.

Growers had invested heavily over the years in just a few varieties of fruit that grow well in Florida, particularly Valencia and Hamlin oranges. That limited genetic diversity in the fields and left the industry vulnerable to disease.

The University of Florida scientists have maintained a diverse collection of citrus plants and have been cross-breeding different varieties in their search for better rootstock on which to graft the Valencia and Hamlin trees.

These cultivars are naturally genetically different and appear more tolerant to greening, although the researchers do not know exactly why.

Among possible explanations are that the root system's ability to effectively deliver nutrition might shore up the tree's ability to stave off disease, or that something excreted by the root might suppress the bacteria as it progresses through the plant.

Gmitter and Grosser are working to quickly propagate enough new rootstocks for a trial covering several hundred acres in various parts of the state. They estimate the trees will be ready for planting by spring 2015.

'GOT TO HAVE IT NOW'

The university intends to make the trees available for purchase even while the trial is under way. Gmitter said growers who would normally wait to see data on a new cultivar's production, juice quality and other factors don't want to wait.

The Florida Department of Citrus, in a market projection report in March, found the state's total citrus production on a "steady declining trend." It said the long-run outlook for the industry was "precarious."

Tree mortality rates have persistently exceeded planting rates, setting a downward course for production, according to the report, Florida Citrus Production and Projections, 2014-15 through 2022-2023.

"We're not waiting until the trial is over, because we've had so many growers who have seen our trees in the small trials who say this is what we want. We've got to have it now," Gmitter said.

Using Pay Per Click Advertising For Your Business Make Significant ...

Using Pay Per Click Advertising For Your Business-Make Significant Profit

Pay per click advertising is a very popular advertising method that many businesses use to build their business and increase their profits. If you set up your pay per click advertisement carefully you can make significant profits from your online or offline business.

Pay per click or PPC advertising has been a very lucrative way for many people to generate traffic to their website and make money online. Yahoo Search Marketing was the first PPC advertising to emerge and now others have joined the party. PPC advertising makes it much easier for small businesses to compete with big businesses on a worldwide level. However, many people have used pay per click advertising and lost a lot of money because they haven’t taken the time to create ads and monitor their performance.

Google Adwords is now the biggest pay per click advertising company but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t use the others. Let’s take a look at the top three pay per click advertising companies.

1. Google Adwords is the biggest in the field and can have your ads up and running in minutes. With Google Adwords you do not need to wait for days for your ad to be approved before it is shown, it is usually up and running as soon as you finish creating your ad. Google will review your ad and if it doesn’t meet their standards it will then be removed. Google has more functionality than the other search engines PPC ads and you can test your headlines, keywords and ads overall to see which ads convert the best.

2. Yahoo Search Marketing, although it was the first PPC advertising company, is not as big as Google Adwords. It is still a very good option for advertising and your ads still receive a lot of traffic. There is no reason why you need to choose just one search engine for your pay per click ads as the more you use the more traffic your ads will receive. Yahoo search marketing gives great options and can be very successful for promoting your business.

3. Bing (previously MSN) is probably on equal par with Yahoo. The Bing PPC advertising is very similar to Google Adwords but doesn’t quite offer as much functionality as Google. Bing PPC is still very effective for business promotion and as a way to earn money online.

These three pay per click advertising companies draw more than 97% of search engine traffic and you can grab a piece of that traffic with pay per click ads for your business. Only spend as much as you can afford and monitor your ads to see which ones are performing well. Those ads that aren’t performing as well as you like should be tweaked until you start seeing the results you are after. Pay per click advertising is a great business tool for any online business.

Twin Peaks International Drive brings its titular views to Orlando ...

A new restaurant has opened on Orlando?s popular tourist hot spot International Drive serving up bar food amidst a rustic setting. But it?s not the chicken wings or the ice cold beer that are bringing visitors to Twin Peaks, catering to a mostly male audience who show up for a nice long look at its ?scenic views.?

Twin Peaks International Drive brings a mountain lodge setting to tropical Central Florida, lining its wilderness cabin style walls with the heads of taxidermied forest animals alongside ample flat screen TVs. Long wooden tables sport hatchets buried in logs while the whole establishment is open to the outside breeze, presenting itself as a secluded getaway from the nearby tourist traffic. It?s clearly an environment built for manly men.

But at Twin Peaks, the real intended draw is inferred from its not-so-subtle name and logo, immediately understood as soon as guests walk through its doors, welcomed with open arms - and shirts - by the ever-boisterous Twin Peaks girls.

Still don?t get what ?Twin Peaks? refers to? Watch what happens in the video below as the girls themselves discover two really obvious clues?

Video: Twin Peaks girls decipher new Orlando restaurant?s name

While the Twin Peaks girls are obviously not shy about flaunting their tight-fitting woodsy attire, they?re not always in-your-face about it either. Beyond the obvious appearance, there?s nothing overtly sexual about visiting this restaurant. The staff is extremely friendly and funny, hired not only for their looks but equally for their wits and charm. When taking orders, they often get cozy, becoming part of the party, taking an empty seat, leaning over a bar, or squishing into a booth to offer personal attention.

Those not accustomed to seeing quite so much skin may shy away at first, but will quickly be made to feel at home by warm personalities. Likewise those who come strictly for the views will find that the girls won?t scold a wandering eye either. It?s all just part of the position. The girls even have a ?beauty bar? in the back behind the kitchen to keep themselves primped, ensuring the best possible views at all times.

So go ahead, let your eyes wander a bit at the photos below before we get to the food and drinks.

There really is more to Twin Peaks than its namesake visual appeal. The recently-opened Orlando location is one of more than thirty nationwide, priding themselves on pouring some of the coldest drinks around, a welcome addition to the area?s hot climate. Vice president of operations Dave Hadelman was more than happy to offer a behind-the-scenes look at the restaurant?s $150,000+ investment into keeping beer cold, from the refrigerator to the tap.

These kegs house a wide variety of beers, domestic, international, and local, each chilled not only in this cooler, but at points throughout the lines and again at the head to ensure the coldest possible pours. And the mugs are kept nearly freezing as well, attended to by staff whose job is only to ensure every guest gets the best beer experience.

Two bars, one inside and one on the covered patio, offer more than enough room to hang out, grab a drink, and socialize for hours while catching the latest game on TV.

There?s even a fire pit outside to sit around whenever Orlando?s weather does turn colder. (A Twin Peaks girl might even join you to help heat things up.)

Naturally, Twin Peaks serves food too, with a menu made up of bar staples including nachos, chicken wings, tacos, cheese sticks, and quesadillas, plus giant portions of chicken fried steak, pot roast, sandwiches, salads, and more. The food is standard fare for a joint like this, nothing to get too excited about but not a bad bite while enjoying a few drinks with friends and admiring the scenery.

Desserts offer the best bites, including churro-style apple turnovers and the ultimate ice cream cookie sundae that?s served with its own edible ?peaks.? Subtlety is not this restaurant?s specialty.

There are no current plans to expand the quickly growing Twin Peaks chain anywhere else in Florida, though many additional locations are expected to pop up throughout the country in the coming months and years. It?s a successful business model, offering a noticeably classier variation on the traditional ?breastaurant? concept.

And Twin Peaks always gives patrons a reason to return, offering themed outfits and events surrounding happenings and holidays as well as an annual bikini contest. So visitors may find the girls? woodsman look replaced by green outfits for St. Patrick?s Day, a variety costumes for Halloween, pirate booties for National Talk Like a Pirate Day, or even lingerie when the Victoria?s Secret Fashion Show airs on TV.
