Watery exoplanet may be diamond-rich instead

Last year astronomers reported the discovery of a diamond planet orbiting a pulsar, a dead star releasing regular radio waves. Now another group says a previously discovered planet, 55 Cancri e, may also contain diamond - and this one orbits a more sun-like star.

Detected in 2004 via the wobbles it induces in its host star, 55 Cancri e already looked unusual. Previous observations led to the suggestion that it was covered in a deep ocean of supercritical water, a kind of water that blurs the line between liquid and gas. But that reasoning only works if you assume the planet is oxygen-rich like Earth, says Olivier Mousis at the University of Franche-Comt? in Besan?on, France.

Mousis and colleagues reckon this assumption is unsupported because the planet's star, 55 Cancri, is richer in carbon than it is oxygen. Recalculating with that in mind, taking the planet's mass and radius into account, suggests that about a third of that mass is carbon.

Based on estimates of the temperature and pressure throughout the planet, this carbon could be in the form of diamond, which requires extreme conditions to form. One of five known planets in its solar system, 55 Cancri e, sits very close to its host star. "When you form diamond, it's only a matter of temperature and pressure, and the temperature is very high on the surface," says Mousis.

The idea that 55 Cancri e is part diamond is still just that, and could yet be revised by further evidence of the planet's true composition. But one thing seems clear: this planet is no bore.

Speak Out Against Pet Overpopulation - ForceChange

By Matthew Clary

Target: Dennis B. Sprung, President and CEO of the American Kennel Club

Goal:?Stop unwanted pets by promoting spay and neuter programs and pet adoption.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) continues to unabashedly support and encourage the breeding of dogs even though a pet is euthanized in the U.S. at an average rate of one every eight seconds. Of course the AKC is not the single source of blame in this tragic situation, but as the premier organization in the field of canines, not only do they promote continued breeding and the notion that purebreds are more desirable than ?mutts? (and therefore need to be bred and purchased), they use their political clout to curb any efforts at reform. There are simply too many dogs in the world and this prestigious, non-profit organization only makes the situation worse.

Since dogs are not humans, a large segment of society does not care that millions of these animals live a horrible existence ultimately to be put to death. It is not done out of spite, but out of lack of concern or outright ignorance. This is why the overbreeding and purchase of dogs will never be stopped, but it can be improved.

The best solution to the problem at this point is spaying and neutering as well as adopting from shelters. This is where the AKC could come in. They could use some of the projected $1.7 million surplus in their 2012 budget to promote adoption from shelters and spay/neuter programs. As of now, the only mention of spaying and neutering on their website involves efforts to stop local attempts to make it law.

If an organization as respected as the AKC stepped in, as opposed to completely ignoring the problem of pet overpopulation while actually making it worse, it is bound to make some improvement. This is not a petition to stop the breeding of purebreds; it is a petition asking for an organization that presents itself as a haven for dog lovers to help society and these unfortunate animals by speaking out and educating a misinformed public as to how they can help the pet population.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Mr. Sprung,

Throughout the world, the American Kennel Club is held in high regard by dog owners and non-dog owners alike. Unfortunately, your organization stands by while extreme pet overpopulation causes over 4 million pets to be euthanized in the United States every year. What is even more unfortunate, is that the AKC promotes the breeding of even more dogs and speaks out against proposed reform (i.e. The California Healthy Pets Act, among others).

As the president and CEO of what is arguably one of the most well-known organizations of animal lovers, it seems grimly ironic that you would not want to do anything to improve the pet overpopulation problem. Your website claims that irresponsible dog owners are the sole source of blame. Even if this was the case and the AKC had nothing to do with the pet overpopulation problem, it seems that you would want to use your influence to speak out against it. Of course by definition, since pet overpopulation is the issue, breeding more pets is a direct cause.

We are not asking the AKC to stop the breeding of purebreds, we are asking you to help spread the word that spaying and neutering, along with adoption from shelters and rescues, is the only way any improvement can be made. At the very least, you could encourage owners of AKC registered dogs to spay and neuter their pets if they are not AKC registered breeders. ?It is a fact that there are too many dogs in the world. So please, as a powerful man and an animal lover, why not do everything you can to stop some dogs from facing the same terrible fate so many millions before them have suffered? The support of your organization could potentially make a dramatic change for the better.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

Some Considerations When You Buy Dinar | All About Finance

Posted by Juliette Cruz on Rating 9.0 ?Outstanding

The current change in the political situation of Iraq has got people talking about its investment potential. While not a lot of people has enough money to put up businesses in the country, there is a way by which you can join in its growth. When you buy dinar, you will also get to enjoy he development of the Iraq?s economy.

There are several good reasons to invest in this currency. Topping the list is the amount of oil that can be found in this country. Another reason why some people believe that growth is attainable is that it is located right at the center of the Middle East and thus it is at the best position to trade with its neighbors. This young democratic nation surely has potential but like all investments, you have to weigh your options carefully. Here are pieces of advise in the purchase of the dinar.

Keep in mind that there are no guarantees when it comes to trading foreign currencies. There are currencies that appreciate quickly and depreciate just as fast. On the other hand there are those that appreciate slowly and be able to maintain its growth. Yet, there are those that are very robust then crash unexpectedly. Understanding this will help you minimize losses and risk wisely.

Fundamentally, it is the economy that dictates the rate of exchange. Know the strengths of the economy. A good knowledge of macroeconomics will come in handy on this one. See what their products are and the demand of which in the international market. The political environment is also an important consideration. The interaction among these factors affect the currency?s strength.

To make money out of this trade one must invest in a currency which will rise in value. For example, you bought fifty Iraqi dinars for one US dollar. A few years later the Iraqi money appreciated and its rate against the US dollar has become two dinars is to one USD. When you sell your dinars at such a rate you will get an amount of twenty five dollars, thus gaining twenty four dollars in profit. But that is just putting things simply. There are a lot more factors to consider than that.

Investments involve risks and risks could either pay off or not. Invest only an amount that you can afford to lose. Do not risk something you cannot afford to lose in the hope that bigger risks will get you bigger pay offs.

Do your assignment, research. If investing in currencies is something foreign to you, make sure that you get as much information on it as you can. It would be wise rely on something you know in dept than on something you know superficially. If a particular currency interests you, read about its economical and political status.

Do not put all you have in one currency. Diversification is key to mitigating risks. While there are trends that you can rely on to predict the growth or demise of a particular currency, there are still other factors that could quickly affect a currency?s rate, a good example would be the September eleven bombings. By having several currencies to your name, you still have a backup should one currency falter.

To buy dinar can be a good investment. However, the certainly of which is still to be determine. Only time can tell if it is indeed a fruitful venture. Just remember to be cautious in every investment you make and your investment will, slowly but surely grow.

Two-wheeled 'unicycle' simplifies the bike

10 hrs.

Owning and riding a bicycle in the crowded, urban streets of tomorrow could be delightfully simple, according to the inventors of?a futuristic bike that looks like a unicycle with a spare wheel.

Known as the Bicymple, the two-wheeler is chain free. Instead, direct-drive pedals are on the rear wheel; the seat is?just above the rear wheel. A short frame connects to handlebars positioned over the second wheel.

The compact, simple design is a head turner that comes with an added twist: the rear wheel can be unlocked, allowing both the front and rear wheels to turn, making the bike more nimble in tight urban spaces.

The video below showcases the bike cruising parking garages and sidewalks in Bellingham, Wash., home of Josh Bechtel and Scalyfish Designs, who created the Bicymple.?

A dropped fly ball by Josh Hamilton, a home run by Ryan Zimmerman and pitch by pitch, the baseball playoff picture became a bit more clear on the final day of the regular season.

The Oakland Athletics clinched the AL West, trumping Texas 12-5 by taking advantage of Hamilton's error. Trailing by 13 games a week before the All-Star break, the A's overcame a four-run deficit Wednesday to relegate the Rangers to a wild-card spot.

The Athletics' next destination ? for the moment, anyway ? was uncertain. Not that they seemed to mind.

"I'll get there when I get there," manager Bob Melvin said.

The New York Yankees hoped to claim the AL East crown a few hours later when they hosted Boston. The Yankees owned a one-game edge over the Baltimore Orioles, who played at Tampa Bay.

A year after a thrilling, last-day scramble for playoff spots, all 10 slots had already been filled. But the AL pairings were still to be determined, plus another monumental achievement was at stake: Miguel Cabrera was in position to win the majors' first Triple Crown since Carl Yastrzemski in 1967.

The playoffs begin Friday when the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals visit Chipper Jones and the Atlanta Braves in the winner-take-all NL wild-card matchup.

Kris Medlen will pitch for the Braves, who have won a record 23 straight games when he's started. Kyle Lohse starts for St. Louis.

"Now we've got to get over this one-game playoff thing to give ourselves a legitimate shot at what we were all shooting for out of spring training," said Jones, retiring at age 40.

On Saturday night, Johnny Cueto will start for visiting Cincinnati against Matt Cain and San Francisco in Game 1 of the NL division series.

Zimmerman and the Washington Nationals got sized for hats with postseason patches, then beat Philadelphia 5-1 to earn home-field advantage all the way through November, if necessary.

There was another winner at Nationals Park, too. The Teddy Roosevelt mascot took the in-game Presidents Race for the first time. Ol' Teddy had lost more than 500 dashes to the 10-foot foam representations of Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.

"I am so glad Teddy won, so we can stop talking about Teddy. People get more excited for a mascot race than a game," Zimmerman said.

Washington and well-rested 21-game winner Gio Gonzalez will play Sunday at the NL wild-card winner in Game 1 of the best-of-five division series.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson is expected to be all right for the opener. He left the dugout in the seventh inning Wednesday because of numbness in his left leg, the result of pinched nerves in his back.

"I'm OK. Nothing wrong with me," he said.
