LG Optimus L9 hands-on (video)

LG Optimus L9 handson

Thought LG didn't have any more to add to the L-Style series to offer the world? Behold the L9. Announced yesterday, the device made an appearance on the IFA show room floor this week, boasting a big and bright 4.7-inch IPS display that makes its brethren look downright shrimpy by comparison. In spite of the display size, the phone feels light, with an 8.9-millimeter profile.

It's important to note here that, in spite of being the king of the L-Series, it's still part of a budget lineup, and as such, the phone's body feels a bit plasticky, and the textured rear had a bit of trouble staying snapped in place in the two models (black and white) that we played with. Specwise, we're talking a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM inside, 4GB of storage (expandable via a microSD slot) and a 2,150mAh battery. The handset's rocking Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.4, to be precise).

The handset's got a fairly nice bezel, with the front-facing camera on the top and a home button on the bottom, flanked by illuminating back and menu touch buttons. A larger, 5MP camera is located on the rear of the device, above the flash. Vodafone has the handset priced at €50.90 subsidized and €340 unsubsidized. Peep a video of the handset, after the break.

Barrel Lamp Holds Nothing But Glorious Light [Beautiful]

In their most unkempt forms, wood, concrete and steel are sturdy and raw materials. And when you can manage to combine the qualities of those materials with an aesthetic form, the results are often gorgeous. Such is the case with New Duivendrecht's Barrel Lamp. More »

Memory improves for older adults using computerized brain fitness ...

UCLA researchers found that older adults who regularly used a brain fitness program played on a computer demonstrated significantly improved memory and language skills.

The team studied 59 participants with an average age of 84, recruited from local retirement communities in Southern California.? The volunteers were split into two groups:? the first group used a brain fitness program for an average of 73.5 (20 minute) sessions across a six-month period while a second group played it less than 45 times during the same period.? Researchers found that the first group demonstrated significantly higher improvement in memory and language skills, compared to the second group.

IMPACT:
The study?s findings add to the field exploring whether such brain fitness tools may help improve language and memory and may ultimately help protect individuals from the cognitive decline associated with aging and Alzheimer?s disease.

Age-related memory decline affects approximately 40 percent of older adults and is characterized by self-perception of memory loss and decline in memory performance.? Previous studies have shown that engaging in mental activities can help improve memory, but little research has been done to determine whether the numerous brain fitness games and memory training programs on the market are effective in improving memory.? This is one of the first studies to assess the cognitive effects of a computerized memory training program.

Thanks, college kid! You're subsidizing my classes

By Jon Marcus, The Hechinger Report

A sophomore at UC Berkeley, June Ahn comes from a family whose income is just enough to put her past the reach of much financial aid. So, like many students, Ahn is using loans to underwrite her education.

To make matters worse, she comes from Washington, not California, so she pays two and a half times as much as in-state tuition. And she pays it even though, as an underclassman, she?s still taking large-enrollment classes that cost the university much less to provide than smaller, upperclass courses and seminars.

It gives Ahn little consolation to know that some of her money is likely being used to subsidize the educations of her lower-income, in-state and junior and senior classmates.

?I?m not in a better financial position than any of the students I would be helping to subsidize,? said Ahn, whose anticipated major ? political science ? also is cheaper for the university to provide than majors for science and engineering students who, at UC Berkeley, are charged the same as she is. ?But I have an extra almost $10,000 that I still need to pay.?

    More from The Hechinger Report

As a new academic year begins, growing scrutiny of record tuition and fees is drawing new attention to the longstanding cycle of subsidies like these on which American colleges and universities depend ? but which they would rather not discuss.

Rich kids subsidize poor kids. Out-of-state students subsidize in-state ones. Humanities majors subsidize science majors. Freshmen and sophomores subsidize juniors and seniors. Undergraduates subsidize graduate students. And international students subsidize everyone.

Now activists and legislators are pushing back against the Robin Hood-style use of some students? tuition revenues to pay for other students? financial aid. They?re pressing for different prices for different subjects based on the actual cost of instruction, and, in some states, even proposing an end to a perk under which taxpayers subsidize tuition for faculty children.

Still, many families and students seem as much in the dark about these practices as airline passengers who pay different fares for similar seats on the same flight to the same place.

?If you combine general financial illiteracy with the opaque nature of college financing, it?s surprising that anybody really knows what?s going on,? said Andrew Gillen, senior researcher at the American Council of Trustees and Alumni.

For universities, there?s an advantage in this, Gillen said: ?If somebody doesn?t know he?s paying more than the kid next to him, he doesn?t get upset.?

But if that student is paying full or nearly full tuition, higher-education experts said, it?s likely some of the money is going to lower-income classmates who aren?t.

?Schools have become more aggressive in this income-redistribution aspect of higher education,? said Richard Vedder, director of the Center for College Affordability and Productivity in Washington, D.C. ?There?s an economic-theory dimension to this, which is that there?s always a small class of students who have a lot of money, and the income-maximizing enrollment manager wants to zap it to these kids.?

At least 15 states have explicit policies under which some of the revenue from students who pay tuition at public universities goes to others who can?t cover the full cost, according to the State Higher Education Executive Officers, or SHEEO. In Arizona, for example, public universities channel about a quarter of tuition revenue into discounts, grants and other forms of financial aid. In North Carolina, at least 25 percent of money generated by any increase in tuition goes to such subsidies, while in California it is one-third of each tuition increase.

Donna Rosato of Money magazine talks about how to cut costs on college tuition and the strategies parents can use to make their child's bachelor's degree more affordable for the family.

Watch the Top Videos on NBCNews.com

Critics say this penalizes not only full-tuition-paying, high-income parents and their students, but also middle-class families already being squeezed by escalating costs. In June, the Iowa Board of Regents ordered the practice to end in that state within five years. There, some $144 million a year in financial aid is redistributed to low-income students ? as well as high-achievers who don?t qualify for federal aid ? from the tuition their classmates pay. The regents called for the portion of tuition that now goes to truly needy students to be replaced by contributions from the universities? fundraising arms.

Similar appeals have come from the governor of Virginia, Arizona legislators and members of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors.

Since universities are also offering more scholarships to students with high grade-point averages and SAT scores, which elevates them in the all-important U.S. News & World Report college rankings ? and since many of those top students come from affluent families and don?t qualify for federal aid, Gillen said another trend is at work. ?Rich, dumb kids,? he said, ?are subsidizing rich, smart kids.?

Out-of-state students at public universities also are increasingly subsidizing in-state students. That?s because out-of-state tuition is almost always higher than in-state ? two and a half times as much for out-of-state than in-state students in the University of California system, for example. At the University of Virginia, out-of-state students pay almost twice what it actually costs to educate them; the rest helps pay for educating everybody else.

Numbers like that are why public universities are aggressively recruiting out-of-state students. About a third of students at the universities of Illinois, Virginia and Washington now come from out of state, and nearly 40 percent at the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At UC Berkeley, the proportion is nearly 30 percent, about six times what it was as recently as 2006. At UCLA and UCSD, almost one in every five students is from outside California.

So much in demand are out-of-state students that they?re more likely to be accepted for admission to both UC Berkeley and UCLA than in-state residents whose parents? taxes subsidize the universities. The California State University system recently announced that it would not accept in-state graduate students next spring; only out-of-state students, who pay more, are welcome to apply to Cal State graduate-degree programs.

International students also subsidize domestic ones. Eighty-one percent pay universities the full price, a much higher proportion than students generally, bringing in around $20 billion a year in tuition and living expenses, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Institute for International Education.

Freshmen and sophomores, meanwhile, whose introductory courses are often taught in large groups in giant lecture halls with help from low-paid teaching assistants, subsidize juniors and seniors, who pay the same tuition but cost from one and a half to two times more to educate, according to a SHEEO survey based on research conducted in Florida, Illinois, New York and Ohio. A member of the faculty at UCLA has separately calculated that the disparity is even greater: Classes averaging 200 students, he found, cost about $56 per student to teach at public universities, compared to $560 per student in classes averaging 20 students. Yet all are charged the same amount.

?The big introductory lectures with 400 students, there?s a lot of profit in that class,? said Gillen. ?And that?s used to subsidize smaller seminars for the upperclass students.?

Richard Cordray, director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, talks with MSNBC's Alex Wagner and the NOW panel about the rising cost of tuition across America and the burden of student loans.

Some of the money also goes to graduate programs that are expensive to operate.

?At the large research universities, the subsidization of graduate students is monstrously large,? Vedder said. ?A student in a Ph.D. program sits in seminars of six and eight students taught by a professor making $150,000 a year and gets an extremely costly education. At the same university, the freshman who?s taking Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Economics, sitting in lectures of 400 people ? these kids are paying the same tuition.?

Undergraduates in low-cost disciplines such as the humanities and social sciences also help to pay for students in subjects that cost more to teach, including fine arts, agriculture, law and engineering, the Delta Cost Project on Postsecondary Education reports, since they, too, all pay identical tuition.

A few universities are starting to charge different prices for different fields. At least 143 public universities now levy so-called differential tuition that varies by major and, in some cases, by year of enrollment, the Cornell Higher Education Research Institute found. The University of Maine, for instance, adds a $75 fee for engineering courses, and the University of Kentucky charges an extra $460 per semester for nursing students.

Your online reputation needs to evolve with you | Biznology

The way you feel now about all those photos of you at the beach, in your suit, body-proud, tanned and drinking ? liberation and joy ? may end up making you feel completely different in your near future ? trapped and ashamed. No matter how young you may be, reading these words, you need to start thinking long-game when it comes to your online reputation.

You?re at the mercy of the Panopticon: networked cameras are almost ubiquitous

Your online reputation on Google Search is a culmination of all your separate, discrete (or indiscreet) choices ? sort of like tattoos ? and it?s always easier to not get inked in the first place than it is live with the consequences or go through the pain and expense of having all of your tribal, prison, lower-back, ankle, neck, and face tattoos removed.

    Easier said than done

The way you want to be perceived really changes over time, from the feeling of abandon too many of us have in high school to the feeling of reckless abandon that too many people film and photograph over Spring Break in college, to the feeling a righteous indignation too many of us feel all through our 20s, to the feeling of abject panic and regret as all of this brave, courageous, fearless, stupid abandon comes to roost and haunt us on Google Images, YouTube, and Google Search.

Do we ever really know how stupid we are?

When my young friends were in their 20s, they were very happy to be live photo-blogged and I captured them shamelessly: at coffee, at parties, at dinner, and all over. Now that they?ve been through sundry Ivyesque graduate programs, they?ve become way more serious and have all come to me, asking me to curate and remove photos that their names bring up on Google Images. Of course I do ? because I love them; but I probably wouldn?t do the same thing for you.

I, on the other hand, desired to become a US Senator since I was 16, so I limited the true idiocy of my choices ? and, because I grew up Catholic, my natural guilt and self-loathing generally won every fight it had with my whimsical and devil-may-care self. I always told Mark that every bit of spontaneity I have ever exhibited has always been emulated and for effect since all of these spot-and-brave decisions have always been suffered over and considered for months. Sometimes you just gotta say WTF? has never become an essential part of any fiber of my being, though I would love people to think it?s essential to who I am. Nope.

I also came up pre-Internet and pre-social media, so embarrassing me would require way too much work for most people: digging up shameful photos, scanning them, uploading them, and whatnot; finally, my threshold for shame pain is massive because I fancy most slights online to be free publicity of my brand ? so I am surely less delicate ? more durable ? than my tenderfoot friends.

So, what if it?s too late ? I?ve already made myself a complete arse?

You can always email me or explore Reputation.com if you?re freaking out and don?t know what to do. But first, you should check to see if you know who controls any and all of those terrible ?tattoos? that ink up your online reputation, be it unfortunate photos on Google Images. Can you un-tag or report images of you on Facebook and Google+ that you don?t want online? Do you know the folks? Do they like you enough to remove the photo, completely, from everywhere it exists online (because, you know, the Internet can now recognize your face so tagging, titling, and labeling is becoming less essential in the age of Big Data and real-time facial recognition and cross-referencing. You can untag until you?re blue in the face and it might not matter anymore).

So, reach out to your friends and quote the Bible at them: 1 Corinthians 13:11: ?When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.? See if that helps. Who can resist the Word of God as spake by King James? If they don?t love you enough anymore and refuse to remove online things that pain you, consider it Karma ? karmic feedback is a bitch (don?t worry, you still can always email me or explore Reputation.com).

Be kind. Everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle

Always remember, when you want folks to help you who don?t have to, being nice always works better than siccing a dog (or in your case, maybe your lawyer) at ?em.

What can I do if my friends resent me and won?t budge?

All you can do, really, is make sure you take it upon yourself to feed the hungry, toothy, maw of Google Search, including video, Picasa, Flickr, Google+, Tumblr, WordPress, WordPress.com, Facebook, Twitter, TwitPic, LinkedIn and your corporate, foundation, and business web pages.

And, if you already have pages populated online, you need to explore all your photo and image ?container? platforms and you need to see if there are ways to either directly change the file name to reflect your name, chris-abraham.jpg, and then you need to explore to see if you?re allowed to intentionally tag each photo: you can do that on Flickr, Facebook, and Google+ for sure ? and there might be others.

If you?re inserting photos into articles or posts that you control, you need to make sure file names reflect your name, preferably with dashes or underscores (as the Internet sometimes gets confused by spaces). And if your image insertion tool ? or you ? know how to add an ALT tag or a title tag to your photo, do so ? but don?t just describe the photo, say something like ?Portrait of Chris Abraham? or ?Official Photo of Chris Abraham? ? Google wants associative and descriptive contextual content ? and you need to do a much better job than everyone else on Google Search in order to become the top results under your name ? better, even, than the folks who are out to mock, embarrass, and shame you.

Google cares about most relevant, yes, but it also prefers the most recent, the most timely, and also the most interconnected and cross-referenced ? as well as content that has the most descriptive and consistent ?meta data:? the following photo is indeed a photo of Chris Abraham, most likely the American one, in his 40s, who lives most of his life in Arlington, VA. That?s all Google really wants and you can be the very best at that because you knows you like you do? Do it!

    In conclusion

Most of you were either stupid, sort-sighted, immortal, young, or in different work and a different place when you got all your full-body Yakuza-style, online reputation tattoos. Don?t worry but it does suck. As they say, youth is wasted on the young.

It probably isn?t that bad, really

You?re probably too much of a control freak and you?re the only one who feels a little too powerless ? you?ve been hurt before and are a little sensitive, now aren?t you? While I think you deserve to have your perfect reflection online? as well as everywhere else ? the Internet really isn?t like that. One of the things you might want to do it work on your tolerance, your sense of humor, your level of ?let go, let Google.? Are you really that ashamed of the photo of your bad mustache, your bad haircut, your bad goatee, or that fat period we all suffered through with you.

So, take a second, take a breath, and reconsider your place in the world

Let me really close by saying the thing that makes you the most beautiful are the scars of your life and of your living: your flaws and your humanity. Consider carefully how curated you need your life to be. Re-sculpting your life online is going to be very time-consuming, very resource-intensive, and very expensive.

    Good luck and Godspeed!

Play2Fun.com ? Name Squeeze Pages ? What They are And How ...

?Name Squeeze Pages?. In case you haven?t heard of them however, now you might have and you will soon learn WHY the majority of the Best Internet marketers use them and why you as well ought to benefit from them.

But, before I get into the meat and potatoes from the WHY?s, I assume it is essential for you to know what ?Name Squeeze Pages? are in order that you will not be lost when reading the rest of this article.

So, with that stated, a ?Name Squeeze Page? by definition is basically a *single* net page that has only a single goal, and that?s? to capture the Names and E-mail Addresses of one?s visitors and/or prospective customers.

That?s it. You don?t need to appear any additional into it then that.

Now that you just know the *What*, now it is time for the *Why* you need to benefit from them.

Well? here it is straight up. You need to make the most of ?Name Squeeze Pages? due to the fact they?re the ?tool? which will create your online company and targeted *Opt-In* list of subscribers that you could sell to over and over once again with no spending a single penny on advertising.

How?s that of a WHY answer

Effectively, that is just one cause. There is more.

What if I told you that by setting up a ?Name Squeeze Page? you might run your whole on the web organization on Auto-Pilot

I?m not kidding and here?s WHY.

The other and most important part of your ?Name Squeeze Page? that I haven?t told you about however will be the *Opt-In* type(that?s exactly where you enter your Name and E-mail Address) and what it is principal function is.

Your Opt-In type is just part of what exactly is known as a ?Autoresponder?.

As well as a ?Autoresponder? is simply a service that may send out a sequence of pre-written emails by you at what ever schedule you select, to who ever decides to Opt-In for what it really is you are providing.(ex. Free of charge Report,eBook,eCourse, and so forth.)

Why is your ?Autoresponder? essentially the most crucial part of your ?Name Squeeze Page? you ask

The answers fairly easy. Your ?Autoresponder? is what will *Automate* your whole on the web business, no matter what your promoting, taking away the need of you having to follow-up with each subscriber manually.

All your needed to complete is load it up along with your pre-written sales offers and up-sells.

Just think about the time you will save by setting up a ?Name Squeeze Page? for your Product or Service, or affiliate items in the event you don?t have your personal, since the facts are, when your visitor visits your internet site and decides not to buy what it really is you must offer you, they?re gone forever. But, in case you have a ?Name Squeeze Page? set up with an enticing offer you and they determine to Opt-In for it, now you have got them for life.

    Pretty Potent stuff!

I hope this produced sense to you and turned the light bulb on upstairs since the facts are, in case your not making use of a ?Name Squeeze Page? to construct a list for the on the web organization, then your truly not creating an enterprise.

deadweight bourke: Self Improvement & Memory Training: How to ...

The human mind is perhaps the most powerful force on earth yet we only use 10% of our minds. It seems crazy when you think about it, only 10%. When you think of how powerful the human mind is, and all of the great technology and conveniences we have created, it is hard to imagine that all that was done by only using 10% of our minds. Imagine if we could use 90%!

The mind is a powerful tool and can be used for your own personal development towards success. However, if you do not use your mind properly it can have the opposite effect. People who think negative thoughts all the time often have bad or negative things happen to them but those who can get in the habit of thinking positive thoughts will reap the rewards of this type of thinking.

One way to tap into your mind power is to try to be aware of what you are thinking. Most of us go through the day just letting our mind go about its business recording memories and spewing up thoughts about what is happening. Very few people actually think about what they are thinking about.

However, controlling your thoughts is key to your personal development and success. In fact, many of the most successful people have great control over what they were thinking. Perhaps you have seen the movie the secret. The basis of this, the Universal law of attraction, has a lot to do with choosing and controlling your thoughts.

The thing is that your thoughts are pure energy and they attract like energy so what you are thinking and what you believe in your mind is what you attract into your life. Therefore, you can use the power of your mind to make your life the way you want it to be. In fact, many believe that you can use this mind power to bring you money, relationships and even to lose weight and heal illness. Surely you must have heard of people who miraculously recovered from a terminal illness simply by their faith or belief that they could?

What you think on the surface, or your conscious mind, is eventually changed into beliefs or truths in your subconscious mind. It is simply by thinking the same thing repeatedly that this happens. You might have been programmed since you were a small child to think that you will never succeed at work. All these years of thinking this have turned into a belief in your subconscious mind. However, simply by starting to think differently - by changing your thoughts from a negative to positive you will start to change your beliefs and thoughts and see positive changes in your life.

One thing you can start to do right away is be aware of your thoughts - are you thinking a negative thought right now? Stop thinking in the negative and start thinking in the positive especially when it comes to things about yourself and your life - just try it and you may be surprised at the changes you see.

GOP OKs platform barring abortions, gay marriage

(AP) ? Republicans emphatically approved a toughly worded party platform at their national convention Tuesday that would ban all abortions and gay marriages, reshape Medicare into a voucher-like program and reject federal spending as an antidote for the nation's ailing job market.

The document opens by warning that while the American Dream has long been of equal opportunity for everyone, "Today that American Dream is at risk." It pledges that the GOP will "begin anew, with profound changes in the way government operates; the way it budgets, taxes and regulates."

Both parties routinely approve platforms at their conventions every four years, meant to encapsulate their principles and goals. Much of their details are customarily ignored when it comes to actually governing.

Even so, a poll by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found more people interested in the GOP platform than in the upcoming acceptance speeches by presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan. The survey found that 52 percent said they were interested in learning about the Republican platform, compared to 44 percent interested in Romney's speech and 46 percent interested in Ryan's.

Democrats lambasted the platform and immediately sought to tie it to Romney, who has differed from some of its details. For instance, he has said he would allow abortions in cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is threatened.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is among several Democrats in Tampa trying to get their party's views heard, called the platform's stances on abortion and immigration "draconian" and "extreme" and blamed Romney. "What you have seen from him is that he does one thing, he says another," Villaraigosa said. "He has taken one position after another, time and again you know, and you can't have it both ways."

Here are key elements of the Republican platform:

    JOB CREATION:

It states that the best jobs program is economic growth. "We do not offer yet another made-in-Washington package of subsidies and spending to create temporary or artificial jobs."

    ___

    SMALL BUSINESS:

The GOP pledges to reform the tax code to make it easier for businesses to generate more capital and create more jobs.

    ___

    TAXES:

"We reject the use of taxation to redistribute income, fund unnecessary or ineffective programs or foster the crony capitalism that corrupts both politicians and corporations."

It says a Republican administration would extend the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003, pending reform of the tax code. It says the party would strive to eliminate taxes on interest, dividends and capital gains altogether for lower- and middle-income taxpayers. It also would work to repeal the estate tax and the alternative minimum tax.

The party backs constitutional amendments to balance the federal budget and require a super majority for any tax increases.

    ___

    MARRIAGE:

The platform affirms the rights of states and the federal government not to recognize same-sex marriage. It backs a constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

    ___

    VOTER INTEGRITY:

"Voter fraud is a political poison," the platform says. It praises legislation to require photo identification for voting and to prevent election fraud.

    ___

    GUN CONTROL:

The party says it opposes legislation intended to restrict Second Amendment rights by limiting the capacity of clips or magazines or otherwise restoring the assault weapons ban passed during the Clinton presidency.

    ___

    ABORTION:

The party states that "the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed." It opposes using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or to fund organizations that perform or advocate abortions. It says the party will not fund or subsidize health care that includes abortion coverage.

    ___

    ENERGY:

The party is committed to domestic energy independence and an "all-of-the-above" energy policy, backing the exploration and development of the Outer Continental Shelf and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. It criticizes the Obama administration for picking winners and losers in the energy sector and expresses support for new coal-fired plants that will be low-cost, environmentally responsible and efficient.

It adds: "We will end the EPA's war on coal and encourage the increased safe development in all regions of the nation's coal resources." It calls on Congress to prohibit the EPA from moving forward with new greenhouse gas regulations "that will harm the nation's economy and threaten millions of jobs over the next quarter century."

    ____

    MEDICARE and MEDICAID:

The platform pledges to move both Medicare and Medicaid away from "the current unsustainable defined-benefit entitlement model to a fiscally sound defined-contribution model." It supports a Medicare transition to a premium-support model with an income-adjusted contribution toward a health plan of the enrollee's choice. Age eligibility in Medicare must be made more realistic in light of longer life spans.

Medicaid services for low income people would be transformed into a block grant program in which the states would be given the flexibility to determine the best programs for their residents.

    ____

    IMMIGRATION:

The platform makes clear that "we oppose any form of amnesty for those who, by intentionally violating the law, disadvantage those who have obeyed it." It demands that the Justice Department halt lawsuits against Arizona, Alabama and other states that have enacted tough measures against illegal immigrants. It says federal funding should be denied to universities that provide in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants. It advocates making English the official national language.

    ____

    HEALTH CARE:

It states that a Republican president on his first day in office would use his waiver authority to halt progress in carrying out the health care act pushed through by President Barack Obama and that Republican victories in November would guarantee that the act is never implemented. It proposes a Republican plan based on improving health care quality and lowering costs and a system that promotes the free market and gives consumers more choice.

    ____

    EDUCATION:

Republicans support consumer choice, including home schooling, local innovations such as single-sex classes, full-day school hours and year-round schools. It says Republicans renew their call for replacing family planning programs for teens "with abstinence education which teaches abstinence until marriage as the responsible and respected standard of behavior."

    ____

    DEFENSE:

The platform says Republicans are "the party of peace through strength" and support the concept of American exceptionalism ? "the conviction that our country holds a unique place and role in human history." It criticizes the current administration for its weak positions toward such countries as North Korea, China and Iran and its reductions in military spending. The Republican national military strategy "restores as a principal objective the deterrence using the full spectrum of our military capabilities."

Bus collides with tanker in China, killing 36

BEIJING (AP) ? A double-decker sleeper bus rammed into a tanker loaded with highly-flammable methanol on a northern Chinese highway early Sunday, causing both vehicles to burst into flames and killing 36 people, state media said.

The official Xinhua News Agency said 39 people were on the long distance sleeper bus when it crashed and only three survived. The survivors were hospitalized, it said, but didn't say what condition they were in.

The tanker had just returned to the highway after an early morning rest stop when it was apparently rear-ended by the bus at around 2:40 a.m. close to the city of Yan'an in Shaanxi province, the official China News website said.

The bus had left Hohhot in Inner Mongolia at 5 p.m. Saturday and was headed south to Xi'an city, it said.

Xinhua news photos showed the charred metal skeleton of the bus rammed up against the back of the tanker.

An official with the local Communist Party propaganda bureau in Yan'an confirmed that the crash occurred but was unable to give details and was unsure of the death toll.

Road safety is a serious problem in China. According to Xinhua, poorly maintained roads and bad driving habits result in about 70,000 deaths and 300,000 injuries a year.

Seven police injured in Belfast sectarian scuffles

Seven Northern Irish police officers were injured Saturday when violence flared during a pro-British parade in central Belfast, police said.

Scuffles broke out after a loyalist marching band defied orders not to parade past a Catholic church in Belfast.

Authorities had banned the Young Conway Volunteers from marching past the church, after the band was filmed playing an allegedly sectarian song in the same place in July.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said seven officers were injured, including a policewoman who was treated in hospital for a head injury before being released.

The officers were reportedly hurt while trying to separate Protestant loyalists from Catholic protesters opposed to British rule in the province.

Around 3,500 people died in the three decades of sectarian violence between Northern Ireland's Catholics and Protestants that largely ended with a 1998 peace agreement, though sporadic unrest and bomb threats continue.

Northern Ireland's "marching season" from April to August, when Protestant loyalists parade in celebration of their heritage, is traditionally a time of heightened tension between the Protestant and Catholic communities.

Brad DeLong: Trying and Failing to Understand Niall Ferguson's ...

For some reason I do not understand, James Fallows and Ta-Nehisi Coates like this from Stephen Marche:

The real issue isn't the substance of Ferguson's argument, though, which is shallow and basically exploded by this point in time. It isn't even the question of how such garbage managed to be written and published. It is, rather, why did Ferguson write it? The answer is simple but has profound implications for American intellectual life generally: public speaking.?

Ferguson's critics have simply misunderstood for whom Ferguson was writing that piece. They imagine that he is working as a professor or as a journalist, and that his standards slipped below those of academia or the media. Neither is right. Look at his speaking agent's Web site. The fee: 50 to 75 grand per appearance. That number means that the entire economics of Ferguson's writing career, and many other writing careers, has been permanently altered. Nonfiction writers can and do make vastly more, and more easily, than they could ever make any other way, including by writing bestselling books or being a Harvard professor. Articles and ideas are only as good as the fees you can get for talking about them. They are merely billboards for the messengers.?

    And so does Justin Fox:

Niall Ferguson and the Rage Against the Thought-Leader Machine: So why the firestorm of criticism [of Ferguson]? A lot of it had to do with one little passage about the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare:

The president pledged that health-care reform would not add a cent to the deficit. But the CBO and the Joint Committee on Taxation now estimate that the insurance-coverage provisions of the ACA will have a net cost of close to $1.2 trillion over the 2012-22 period.

What Ferguson left out is that the Congressional Budget Office also said that other provisions of the law (reductions in Medicare spending and increases in taxes) will more than make up for that cost, resulting in a net reduction in the deficit. His wording was clearly misleading: Obama's "health-care reform" included both the insurance-coverage provisions and the other provisions.

When Princeton economist and frequent Ferguson sparring partner Paul Krugman pointed this out, Ferguson could have easily said something like Oops, I worded that poorly. But the point stands that increasing health coverage is going to cost a lot. Instead, he doubled down and argued that because he'd written "insurance-cost provisions" he'd been entirely correct. Along the way, he again selectively quoted from the CBO in a way that completely misrepresented the meaning of the passage he cited. Which was when the piling on really began?.

[P]eople like Business Insider's Joe Weisenthal, Politico's Dylan Byers, and Slate's Dave Weigel who had no political axe to grind? were flabbergasted at Ferguson's sheer shamelessness. These are all leading members of a rising digital media elite, closely connected via social media, who are pretty sure their peers and readers would never let them get away with nonsense like that.

Which is where my thought leader idea comes in. Ferguson is a great financial historian ? his history of the Rothschild family is brilliant. In recent years he's become more of a generalist, and has focused more on current events. That's not a bad thing?. But Ferguson has been so good at it?. Stephen Marche pointed out on Esquire.com? [that] conference organizers? pay Ferguson $50,000 to $75,000 to entertain and edify a hotel ballroom full of business types about "Chimerica" or "the six killer apps of Western civilization."

That's the link with Lehrer and Zakaria, who are (or probably were, in Lehrer's case) big on the speaking circuit as well?. The path to lucrative thought-leaderdom blazed over the past couple of decades was to establish yourself with dense, serious work (or a big, important job) and then move on to catch-phrase manufacturing (I spent a few weeks following Tom Friedman around in 2005, and learned that he had made this transition very deliberately). Nowadays ambitious young people looking to break into the circuit often just aim straight for the catch-phrases. Speakers bureaus need pithy sales pitches, not complex erudition ? and while speaking fees might be spare change for Mitt Romney, for journalists and academics they often represent their only real shot at a top-tax-bracket income.

The result is an intellectual environment that seems to increasingly reward the superficial, and keeps rewarding those who make it into the magic circle of top-flight speakers even if they don't have anything new or interesting to say. Or at least: a part of the intellectual environment is like that. There's also a lively, seemingly much more meritocratic intellectual scene in the blogosphere and on Twitter. "The growth of online venues," wrote blogger and international relations scholar Daniel W. Drezner in a journal article in 2008 "has stimulated rather than retarded the quality and diversity of public intellectuals."

Where things get combustible is when the two scenes collide ? when speaker's-bureau pundits get called out online for misdeeds, errors, or just inanities?. [I]t's fair to say that our thought leaders have as a group done a disastrously poor job of leading our thoughts over the past decade, so some kind of shake up is in order.

My impression was that at Ferguson's level of this--not at mine--there are many, many more groups of people that want you to come speak than you could possibly accept and still get anything done, and so you reject every invitation to travel and speak that comes along unless it (a) advances your broader personal intellectual agenda, or (b) comes with so much money attached that you would feel guilty and like a foolish schmuck for turning it down. Niall's current feel-guilty-and-like-a-foolish-schmuck level appears to be $50K.

But it is, IMHO, highly, highly unlikely that he is crafting his print message in order to try to raise that level from $50K to $100K.

More important, chopping off 2/3 of a sentence from a CBO report so that you can claim it says something very different than it actually says is not a way to boost your feel-guilty-and-like-a-foolish-schmuck level.

It's a way to get your peers to shift from saying "he is highly entertaining and has a definite point of view that will wake you up" to "he will tell you some things that just aren't so: you can use your money better on somebody else".

Contrary to what Stephen Marche says, this kind of misrepresentation is not a good career move on Ferguson's part--not even with the shortest-run speaking-fee-maximization definition of "career"?

City sees increase in sales tax, home rule tax ? Local ? Mt. Vernon ...

MT. VERNON ? Despite ending a string of successive months of increases in the city?s sales tax and home rule tax receipts in April, the city rebounded with increases in the receipts for May, according to figures from the city?s finance department.

Sales tax receipts showed the largest improvement in May between the two with an 8.8 percent increase over the same month the fiscal year prior with $462,490, compared to $425,073 last year. Receipts, however, were down 5.6 percent in April, falling from $438,054 in FY 2011 to $413,345 this fiscal year. That decline ended a nine-month run of similar increases that began in July on FY ?11.

The city?s fiscal year began May 1.

The decline also lowered the city?s year-to-date intake for actual receipts this year as compared to last year, though it remains in the black for an increase of 1.5 percent, with a jump of $12,708 for April and May over the same time period last year. Year to date, the city has brought in $875,836, nearly $10,000 under what was projected thus far for the year. ?

The 1 percent home rule tax showed a similar blip in its six-month run of increases, dropping 4.6 percent in receipts for April but climbing back 2.2 percent in May. In April, home rule tax receipts were $301,330 compared to $315,948 the year before. In May, receipts were $320,847 compared to $313,862 the previous year. Receipts to date are $20,157 under what was projected in this year?s budget. Projections are based on the previous year?s receipts with roughly 3 percent added.

Finance Director Merle Hollmann noted that both taxes are a reflection of the health of the local economy and pointed to large-ticket purchases such as automobiles as another good indicator. Given that there was a significantly higher increase in sales tax receipts over the home rule tax in May, Hollmann said he believes many people purchased vehicles that month. Home rule tax applies to the same purchases as sales tax excluding merchandise requiring titles or licensing such as automobiles and boats. Also, groceries, prescription drugs and medical equipment are excluded. ?

?We are growing. We have more retail establishments and a broader base. And, consumer confidence is up,? he said. ?We are spending more money.? ?

Much of that spending, he added, is coming from people who work in Mt. Vernon but live elsewhere.

Meanwhile, state income tax payments to the city, though three months behind in being paid, are also on the rise, up by 7.3 percent in year-to-date comparisons between this fiscal year and last, from $290,606 for May, June and July receipts last fiscal year to $311,849 for the same period this year. July marks the sixth straight time there has been an increase when comparing receipts of the same months but different fiscal years.

Hollmann noted that while the state continues to be behind in its payments, the number of months behind is improving. Fortunately, he added, the city has been able to cover its expenses despite the cash flow delays from the state.

Police document photographed reveals Julian Assange tactics

The briefing paper, captured by an eagle-eyed photographer as an official carried it in his hand, lays out the major difficulty the WikiLeaks founder faces, even though he's received diplomatic asylum.

    By Raphael Satter,?Associated Press / August 24, 2012

A confidential document photographed by Britain's Press Association news agency lays out Scotland Yard's simple strategy for dealing with Julian?Assange?should he ever try to leave Ecuador's Embassy in London.

    ' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
    ' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

"Assange?to be arrested under all circumstances," the hand-written note says.

The briefing paper, captured by an eagle-eyed photographer as an official carried it in his hand, lays out the major difficulty the WikiLeaks founder faces, even though he's received diplomatic asylum. He's safe as long as he remains in the embassy. The minute he steps outside, he faces immediate arrest ? and speedy extradition to Sweden ? over sex crimes allegations leveled against him there.

It's a standoff that has the potential to drag on for weeks, months, or even years, and it's one that has pitted the United Kingdom ? which has warned it could revoke the embassy's status if diplomats continue to shelter the Australian computer expert ? against the small Andean nation of Ecuador and many of its left-leaning Latin American allies.

The world's media have followed every move in the increasing convoluted WikiLeaks saga ? which has elements of journalistic intrigue, conspiracy theory, legal wrangling, and international diplomacy.

The latter got the most play Friday, with the Ecuadoreans saying that several South American diplomats had visited the embassy in solidarity with Ecuador's stand against Britain's warning.

Argentina, which fought a brief war with Britain in 1982 over the Falkland Islands ? also known as the Malvinas ? took the opportunity to scold London for the move, which it described as a "violation of international law."

"This action shows the arrogance of British diplomacy," the Argentinian Embassy said in a statement. "It doesn*t come as a surprise for Argentinians, as it is similar to the British statements on the Malvinas Question, in which the U.K. has also disregarded international law."

Britain's Foreign Office said earlier that it had delivered a letter to Ecuador's Embassy ? but declined to say what was in it. Neither side shows any sign of budging any time soon.
