Insight Application Health Check

Sonatype's Insight Application Health Check is a small utility that scans Java applications for any security vulnerabilities and license issues.? The tool gives organizations a detailed look into the components being used within Java applications to determine whether any packages or libraries being used are out of date or contain any known vulnerabilities. Users can run the application and get a summary of the results for free. To get the full details, however, the user will have to purchase the tool for $499. For a limited time, Sonatype is offering the full reports for only $99.

The Application Check can be used by both businesses building their own applications as well as those who bought or downloaded a third-party software for use. Businesses can make sure that the application they are using won't somehow act as a backdoor to the network because of an exploitable vulnerability.

Why Check Apps?
Statistics provided by Sonatype paint a bleak picture. More than 80 percent of a typical Java application consists of existing open-source libraries and frameworks. Over 70 percent of developers tend to find reusable code snippets and dependencies by searching online, but it's a challenge to keep up with update announcements for each component. Only a third of companies are aware of what reusable code and dependences are being used in their applications in the first place. If there is a security vulnerability in one of these code snippets, it gets integrated into the application.

This isn't just a theoretical problem. There were more than 46 million downloads of insecure versions of the 31 most popular open-source security libraries and Web frameworks in one year, Sonatype told me. For example, Google Web Toolkit, a popular software development framework that allows web developers to create and maintain complex JavaScript front-end applications in Java, is downloaded 17.7 million times a year, despite having known vulnerabilities.

Setup
Setup is a matter of downloading and running the Java application from the Sonatype website. The scanner can handle JAR, WAR and ZIP files. The application asks for an email address to which it can send the completed report and the directory path to the Java application. After I ran the scan, the report was sent to my inbox. The application offers only a summary report with the free version. Paid users receive a token that is entered into the application. With the code in place, all the reports contain full information.

Report
The report has four tabs, Summary, Security Issues, License Analysis, and Unidentified Artifacts. The summary page has visual graphics and statistics about the scan, such as the number of security vulnerabilities and license alerts found, as well as the number of components used in the application.

The Security Issues page is a long list of vulnerabilities that were found. Threat Level is a scale of one through 10 the application uses to indicate the severity of the issues detected. Each entry lists the universal identifier from sources such as Common Vulnerability Errors or the Open Source Vulnerability Database to indicate what vulnerability was found, and the actual file or component the vulnerability was found in.

License Analysis is yet another list, this one showing all the licenses being used by various libraries and components. The scanner looks for conflicts between the multiple licenses. Like the threat level for the previous page, each entry has a scale for License Threat and the file or component protected by that license.

Clicking on the entry on either Security Issues or License Analysis pages displays some more information about the detected item. On the security page, clicking on the actual vulnerability code takes the user to the appropriate lookup page for CVE or OSVDB. The detail view also lists in which version the particular vulnerability was fixed.

The final Unknown Artifacts page contains items the scanner couldn't recognize that would require manual investigation.

Lochte wins 400 IM in blowout; Phelps finishes 4th

LONDON (AP) ? Ryan Lochte strolled the deck of the Olympic Aquatics Centre wearing diamonds in his mouth and lime-green sneakers on the feet that powered him through the water faster than anyone else. Beaming, he chomped playfully on his gold medal while Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" blared throughout the massive arena.

Michael Phelps?

He was nowhere to be found.

Not during the race.

Not when it came time to hand out the medals.

On a stunner of an opening night at the pool in London, Phelps was routed by his American rival in the 400-meter individual medley, losing to Lochte by more than 4 seconds Saturday. That's not all: The winningest Olympian ever didn't win any medal at all, the first time that's happened in a race of this magnitude since he was a 15-year-old kid competing in just one event at the Sydney Games, a dozen years ago.

"It was horrible," Phelps told coach Bob Bowman when he climbed out.

Bowman's reply: "It was."

Lochte turned the much-anticipated duel with Phelps into a blowout, raising serious questions about whether the guy who has won 14 gold medals and 16 medals overall has anything left in the tank for his Olympic farewell.

Phelps is planning to retire as soon as he finishes the last of his seven races in London, but he looked ready to call it a career while struggling just to pull himself from the water when his first event was done.

He was totally spent.

He was thoroughly beaten, perhaps signaling a changing of the guard at the pool.

"This is my year," said Lochte, who popped in his grillz ? diamond-studded mouth jewelry ? for the victory ceremony. "I know it and I feel it, because I've put in hard work. I've trained my butt off for four years ... and there's no better way to start this Olympics off than getting gold."

For Phelps, the start of these games couldn't have been more out of character.

He barely qualified for the evening final, a performance that hinted at trouble ahead. Trouble indeed. Phelps struggled to a fourth-place finish, blown out by Lochte and beaten by Brazil's Thiago Pereira and Japan's Kosuke Hagino.

"It was just a crappy race," Phelps said. "I felt fine the first 200, then I don't know. They just swam a better race than me, a smarter race than me, and were better prepared than me. That's why they're on the medal stand."

Lochte took the gold with a time of 4 minutes, 5.18 seconds. Pereira (4:08.86) and Hagino (4:08.94) were well back but ahead of Phelps, who touched fourth in 4:09.28 ? nearly 5 1-2 seconds off his world record from the Beijing Olympics and not nearly as fast as he went during the U.S. trials last month.

Since finishing fifth in his lone event at Sydney, the 200 butterfly, Phelps was 16-of-16 when it came to winning medals at the Olympics ? 14 golds and two bronzes. That run is over.

Lochte climbed out of the pool with a big smile, waving to the crowd and looking about as fresh as he did at the start. He had predicted this would be his year and, for the first race of the Olympics at least, he was right on the mark.

"I think I'm kind of in shock right now," he said. As for Phelps, "I know he gave it everything he had. That's all you can ask for."

Phelps was trying to become the first male swimmer to win the same individual event at three straight Olympics. He'll have three more chances at a threepeat before he's done in London, having also won the 200 individual medley, plus the 100 and 200 butterfly, at Athens and Beijing.

But he'll need a major comeback. After one race, he looks nothing like the swimmer who won six gold medals in Athens, then a record eight in Beijing to break Mark Spitz's Olympic record.

"I'm surprised, and not pleasantly," Bowman said. "I expected he'd be in the 4:06 range."

With first lady Michelle Obama in the house waving a small U.S. flag, everyone expected a duel between the two American stars.

Only Lochte showed up.

Phelps fell behind right from the start in the butterfly, his trademark stroke. From there, it was all Lochte. He stretched his margin in the backstroke and breaststroke, then cruised to the gold in the freestyle, a good three body lengths ahead of the rest of the field.

"It's frustrating, that's all I can say. It's pretty upsetting," Phelps said. "The biggest thing now is to try to look forward. I have a bunch of other races, and hopefully we can finish a lot better than how we started."

China had a big night, claiming a couple of gold medals.

Sixteen-year-old Ye Shiwen set a world record in the women's 400 individual medley ? only the third mark to fall since high-tech bodysuits were banned at the end of 2009. She won in 4:28.43, breaking the mark of 4:29.45 by Australia's Stephanie Rice at the 2008 Beijing Games. American Elizabeth Beisel took silver and China's Li Xuanxu grabbed the bronze.

Sun Yang flirted with a world record in the men's 400 freestyle. He took gold in 3:40.14, just off the mark of 3:40.07 by Germany's Paul Biedermann in a rubberized suit three years ago. When it was done, Sun propped himself on the lane rope, pumping his fist and splashing the water.

South Korea's Park Tae-hwan won silver in 3:42.06, fortunate even to take part after initially being disqualified for a false start in the prelims. The ruling was overturned by governing body FINA a couple of hours later on appeal. Peter Vanderkaay of the U.S. won the bronze.

Australia captured gold in the women's 400 freestyle relay with an Olympic record of 3:33.15, rallying to pass the Americans and hold off the fast-charging Netherlands.

The U.S. got off to a blistering start with Missy Franklin swimming leadoff under world-record pace, and the Americans were still ahead after Jessica Hardy went next. But the Australians rallied behind Brittany Elmslie on the third 100, and Melanie Schlanger held on at the end, with Ranomi Kromowidjojo closing fast to give the Netherlands a silver in 3:33.79.

The other members of the winning team were Alicia Coutts and Cate Campbell.

The Americans slipped to the bronze in 3:34.24, but that was still good enough to give Natalie Coughlin the 12th medal of her career, tying Dara Torres and Jenny Thompson as the most decorated U.S. female Olympians in any sport.

Coughlin swam in the morning prelims, then was reduced to the role of cheerleader in the evening as the Americans went with Franklin, Hardy, Lia Neal and Allison Schmitt. Everyone who swims on a relay gets a medal, though.

"I really have no idea what to think of it so far," Coughlin said. "I'll have to take it all in tonight. I'm very proud of it, but I've never been on a morning relay before."

There was no medal for Phelps.

His close call in the morning prelims put him in an already uncustomary position ? swimming on the outside in the No. 8 lane. He only had one swimmer next to him and no idea what Lochte and the others in the middle of the pool were doing.

Not that it would have mattered.

"I don't think the lane had anything to do with it," Phelps said. "I just couldn't really put myself in a good spot for that race. It's frustrating for sure. ... It's just really frustrating to start off on a bad note like this."

Phelps still has six more events to swim in London, plenty of time to make up for his dismal start. He remains two behind the most medals won by any Olympian ? Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina's mark of 18 ? nine gold, five silver, four bronze.

Phelps put himself in position to swim another eight events with his performance at the U.S. trials, but he decided to drop the 200-meter freestyle, feeling one less race would give his body a better chance to recover and improve his performance in the other events.

Now, he may be regretting that decision.

The 400 IM was an event he has dominated, winning gold at the last two Olympics and holding the world record for a full decade. But, tired of putting his body through such a grind, he dropped it from his program after setting a world record in Beijing four years ago (4:03.84), vowing never to swim it again.

He should have stuck with that pledge. Clearly, Phelps didn't leave himself enough time to get back in the kind of shape he needed to win the brutal race, having only brought it back earlier this year.

"I was lucky to get in," he said, referring to his slow time in the morning. "I had a chance to put myself in a spot to start off on a good note and didn't do it."

Lochte gave the Americans their first gold medal of the London Games and put himself in position to fulfill the promise he showed at last year's world championships, where he won five golds and beat Phelps in their two head-to-head meetings.

The friendly rivals have one more showdown in London, in the 200 individual medley. Phelps edged Lochte in that race during the U.S. Olympics trials, but Lochte appears to be on top of his game when it really counts.

They might be working together on Sunday, when both are in the mix to compete for the U.S. in the 4x100 free relay.

There appear to be no hard feelings.

"Congrats to (at)RyanLochte," Phelps tweeted afterward. "Way to keep that title in the country where it belongs!!"

"Thanks," Lochte replied: "I couldn't do it without you."

In Michigan, a ballot measure to enshrine union rights

DETROIT | Sun Jul 29, 2012 4:22pm EDT

DETROIT (Reuters) - After suffering a string of political setbacks in the U.S. industrial heartland, organized labor hopes Michigan voters will help turn the tide in a November election by supporting a state constitutional amendment for the right to unionize.

The union-backed ballot proposal would make collective bargaining a constitutionally protected right and cripple efforts to pass so-called "right to work" legislation in the state. Critics say the measure, which would cover private as well as public employees, would be a "death warrant" for Michigan's economy because it would discourage businesses from bringing new jobs to Michigan and encourage some already in the state to leave.

Experts say the union push, which included a door-to-door weekend canvassing effort by delegates attending the Detroit convention of the American Federation of Teachers, is likely to increase voter turnout in the fall presidential election in a state that is too close to call.

A poll released last month by Mitchell Research showed President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in a dead heat in Michigan, where Obama easily beat Republican John McCain in 2008.

"It's a critical time and a critical issue," said Marva Boatman, an AFT conference delegate who is a special education teacher from Washington, D.C., as she rang doorbells and knocked on doors outside Detroit on Saturday, asking voters to support the amendment.

Only a handful of states, including Florida and Missouri, have made unionizing an activity protected by the state constitution, according to F. Vincent Vernuccio, director of labor policy at The Mackinac Center for Public Policy, a free-market think tank focused on Michigan.

But the Mackinac Center and other critics, including the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, say the amendment - which supporters call the "Protect Our Jobs Act" - would be a more sweeping measure.

They claim it would allow public-sector unions to use contract negotiations to override acts of the legislature, such as laws limiting how much taxpayers pay for government employee healthcare.

"It is extremely radical and would fundamentally change the power structure in Michigan," Vernuccio said.

CALLED "ECONOMIC DEATH WARRANT"

Greg Mourad, vice president of the National Right to Work Committee, said if voters approve the measure they will be "signing their own economic death warrant.

"It would make it significantly harder for Michigan to create and attract jobs," Mourad said.

Michigan has been hard hit by the decades-long struggle of the Detroit-based automakers and the continuing restructuring of the domestic car business. One measure of just how much that restructuring has realigned politics in the state can be seen in the fact that Romney, who has criticized the 2009 auto bailout backed by the once-dominant United Auto Workers union, is running so close with Obama.

Supporters of the "Protect Our Jobs" measure submitted nearly 700,000 signed petitions - twice the number needed - to have the proposal put on the November ballot.

The Michigan Department of State is expected to certify the petitions next month after the deadline passes for opponents to submit challenges to the signatures.

Vernuccio said recent polling had shown voters equally divided over the measure.

According to documents filed last week with the Michigan Secretary of State, organized labor and others have raised more than $8 million to support pro-union initiatives in the state this fall.

In addition to the constitutional amendment, unions also are asking Michigan voters to repeal a law giving state-appointed emergency managers wide powers to cut spending in municipalities and school districts deemed to be experiencing a "financial emergency."

That law has been used to take over more than half a dozen financially ailing cities and school systems in the state in recent years and to void union contracts.

Since the Republican victory in the 2010 midterm elections, organized labor has taken a beating in the Midwest, a region that was once a union stronghold.

In June, a union effort to oust Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, a Republican who curbed collective bargaining by public employees in his state in 2011, was handily defeated.

Earlier this year, Indiana became the country's 23rd state, and the first in the industrial heartland, to pass "right to work" legislation that bars employers from signing union contracts that require employees to pay fees for representation.

American nuns will meet in St Louis next week to consider their response to a Vatican report which questioned their doctrinal loyalty.

The New York Times reports that the assembly of nuns will decide how to act in wake of the scathing critique issued in the Spring.

President of the Leadership Conference Sister Pat Farrell told the paper that the Vatican seems to regard questioning as defiance, while the sisters see it as a form of faithfulness.

She said: ?We have a differing perspective on obedience. Our understanding is that we need to continue to respond to the signs of the times, and the new questions and issues that arise in the complexities of modern life are not something we see as a threat.?

The paper also quotes the former head of the church?s doctrinal office, Cardinal William J. Levada.

He met with the nuns? leaders in June, just before he retired, and said afterwards that they should regard his office?s harsh assessment as "an invitation to obedience."

At the time, Cardinal Levada said: ?I admire religious men and women. But if they aren?t people who believe and express the faith of the church, the doctrines of the church, then I think they?re misrepresenting who they are and who they ought to be.

The gathering of the nuns will decide whether or not to cooperate with the three bishops appointed by the Vatican to supervise the overhaul of their organization.

The Leadership Conference of Women Religious represents about 80 percent of women?s Catholic religious orders in the United States.

The report says that the Leadership Conference is: ?Considering at least six options that range from submitting graciously to the takeover to forming a new organization independent of Vatican control, as well other possible courses of action that lie between those poles."

Church scholars told the paper that the power struggle between the nuns and the Vatican has been "building for decades."

The report states that at issue are: ?Questions of obedience and autonomy, what it means to be a faithful Catholic and different understandings of the Second Vatican Council.?

In response, the nuns have claimed their loyalty to Vatican II.

Sister Janice Farnham, a retired professor of church history at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, said: ?We were the ones who probably took Vatican II and ran the fastest and the farthest with it.

?Sometimes our church leaders forget, we were tasked to do these things by the church. The church said jump, and we said, how high?

?The church said update, renew, go back to your sources, and we did it as best we could. We did it with a passion, and we paid dearly.?

Higher Risk of Skin Cancer From Sunbeds - Massage-Chair-Relief ...

The risk of having skin cancer from sunbeds is higher than previously thought. The?risk of skin cancer for individuals who used sunbeds was 20 per cent higher than someone who has never used one. If the sunbed was used before the age of 35, the risk was almost doubled. The researchers recommend that tanning under the age of 18 be restricted, and unsupervised tanning salons be banned.

Archives ? Deconstructing Riding ? Horse Listening

Deconstructing Riding

When we sit back to ponder for a moment, we make connections and come to new realizations that were perhaps not clearly evident before.?In our quest for riding ?perfection? (we all know there is no such thing!), we find ourselves analyzing, critiquing, and elaborating on various topics ranging from the riding experience. Please read through these musings and (as always) feel free to add your experiences and thoughts in the comments sections.

Ride Backwards, But Ride Effectively!?Although the rider had developed the correct ?look?, the horse was telling a different story.

How Do You Know Your Horse Is Using His Back??In the long run, our primary motivation for self-improvement in riding is for the sake of the horse?s health. We want horses that live well, staying strong and vigorous long into their old age.

Frame, Round or Collection??Do you know the difference, and in a pinch, would you be able to identify it in a moving horse?

Take the Credit, Bad AND Good:?In our quest for?balance?(not just on the kind on the back of the horse), it is essential for us to look at our achievements from both angles.

Doing It Because It Makes You Feel Good:?Have you ever done something around/with/for your horses in a ?feel-good? way for YOU?

Ten Habits of Competent Riders: This is our most popular post by far.?What do great riders have in common that makes them appealing to watch, steadily develop their riding skills and become role models for others to aspire to emulate?

The Dynamic Dependency of Horseback Riding: Why is it that riding can become so difficult at times? In riding, nothing can be done in isolation.

When Do You Start Riding Your Horse??This question was being posed to me by a?very respected and horse-wise mentor one day long ago, early in my riding development.

How To Be An Active Horseback Rider (a.k.a. Riding With Intention):?What do you do when your ride isn?t going as planned? How do you respond when your horse scoots out from under you, spooks at the horse-killing object, or flat out ignores you?

When ?Good Enough? Just Isn?t Good Enough In Horseback Riding:?We come up with all sorts of excuses to explain why we don?t want to or can?t get past the problem.

Too Good to be True? Finding Your Horse?s ?Happy Place?:?Did you know that through riding, you can help your horse achieve a happy, content outlook on life? Sounds ridiculously far-fetched? Too good to be true?

Stepping ?Forward? in Horse Riding:?The term ?forward? is used liberally in horse riding but is often misunderstood.

A Cautionary Horse Tale: Once you decide to ride horses, you put into place a domino effect of consequences, which will occur whether you are conscious of them or not. It?s like a rule of nature.

The Truth About Balance:?We all strive for balance ? in our position, our seat, our movement with the horse.

Blueprinting ? the Good, the Bad and the Ugly:?Blueprinting, in the riding sense, refers to the?muscle memory?that is developed in both the horse are rider.?Going on ?autopilot? when riding horses can be a good thing? or not!

Muscle Memory Matters in Horse Riding: Many small muscle contractions act within split-seconds in order for us to keep ourselves in the saddle and moving in tandem with the horse. Anyone who has ridden for even a short time can attest to the development of ?muscle memory?.

Farm Rules | Van & Sons Farm

Over the 10 years that Van & Sons Farm has been in existence, we have learned many things! One of those ?things? is that farms should have clearly communicated and posted rules ? this is for the safety of horse, rider, and farm guests. Most of our barn rules are pretty ?standard? (or, at least, we think they should be), and have been cultivated through our experiences. Yes, most of the rules have come about because someone, at sometime, has actually DONE these things at our farm?

So, here they are! You will also find these rules posted in the barn aisles, adjacent to the arena entrances, and in our observation room (in case you ever have questions). Rules apply to boarders, students, and all other guests to the farm.

  1. All guests to the farm must have a general liability waiver on file ? waivers must be completed prior to engaging in any equine-related activities, including ?petting? the horses.
  2. Children under the age of 18 MUST have immediate adult supervision at all times. Children under the age of 14 are not allowed to roam the premises without an adult actively ?roaming? and overseeing the child?s activities. Farms pose many inherent risks, in the form of animals who may bite, kick, peck, head-butt or scratch, electric fences, and farm equipment ? it is a parent/guardian?s sole responsibility to be sure that their child is behaving responsibly and respectfully at all times.
  3. Riders under the age of 18 MUST wear an ASTM/SEI approved safety helmet at all times. We suggest that all riders wear a helmet while riding.
  4. Long pants and heeled boots are strongly suggested for riding.
  5. Flip flops and all other form of open toed shoes are strictly banned on the farm. Clients, please make sure your guests are dressed appropriately; we don?t want to send anyone home.
  6. Do not touch/use anyone else?s tack, equipment or property without permission.
  7. Clean up after yourself and your horse. This includes sweeping and removing manure from common areas, such as arena, wash racks, the observation room, and aisle ways.
  8. Do NOT spit gum and other candy onto our sidewalks or barn floors.
  9. No gossip at the barn. If you have a conflict, resolve it with the other person or talk to a barn employee.
  10. No horseplay at the barn. This includes running, shouting, throwing projectiles, waving objects, wrestling, fighting, climbing on furniture and chasing.
  11. No pets from home are allowed on the premises. One time, case-by-case permissions may be given by the barn owner and apply to that individual instance only. Our dogs, who call this farm their home, don?t always appreciate your family pets.
  12. Arena doors must be kept closed, or must be secured by rails while riding and working horses.
  13. Horses are not to be left unattended anywhere on the property, including in the wash racks, aisles or arena.
  14. Turn-Out: Horses are not to be turned out in the indoor arena. They are not to be turned out into a pasture/paddock/herd which they are not assigned to by the barn owner.
  15. No riding in the barn aisles, pastures or parking lot.
  16. Keep barn aisle ways clear at all times. Groom, tack up, medicate and pet horses in designated areas. Apply hoof dressings in the wash rack with a mat.
  17. Van & Sons Farm exercises ZERO TOLERANCE of inhumane, neglectful, disrespectful or malicious treatment of humans or animals.
  18. Respect other people and their horses when visiting the barn or riding.
  19. No sitting, standing or hanging out in the arena unless a clinic is being conducted and prior approval is given. Parents and guardians must observe from the observation room or their vehicles while students are participating in their lesson.

Remember at all times that use of our arena, observation room and tack room are privileges that we are glad to share with you, not a right. Failure to abide by the above rules may result in these privileges being revoked, or the termination of services at our farm.

Lady Gaga Sends Best Wishes to Robsten

Count Lady Gaga among the Robsten fans who have not given up hope.

During yesterday's frenzy of gossip over Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and the former's fling with Rupert Sanders, Gaga sent out the following Tweet:

"Geez this kirstew rob stuff is brutal. Makes me sad the way press acts. Hope they're ok."

Lady Gaga on TwitterPhoto of Kristen Stewart

The pop star wrote that message earlier in the day, however, making it unclear if she was aware of the photos that soon leaked out proving Stewart and Sanders did, indeed, hook up. Or of Stewart's eventual admission.

Since then, the Snow White and the Huntsman director has also apologized and owned up to his actions, while millions of Twilight Saga fans wonder about the fate of Rob and Kristen.

Some of them are also reacting in far less measured tones than Gaga.

The Nuclear Approach To Climate Change

**for completeness, we might also consider the distribution of the heat between the surface and the molten core, but to be fair, other than the trivial amount of geothermal energy we use, there's a negligible amount to think about here.

Well thanks at least for including it for completeness, since that one source exceeds our current electrical energy needs for the next thousand years with current technology - by which time technology may have advanced a wee bit. The Yellowstone Caldera by itself throws off more thermal energy each minute than, converted to electrical energy, the world requires. And cooling that damned thing might be in our best interest since it's likely to bury 60% of the US in ash someday - again, as it has many times before.

Solar is great too, and can also be baseload power with a big enough heatsink - or balanced with geothermal plants that produce on demand solar and wind can use geothermal for a heatsink / corrector for low/no production. Geothermal plants can with slant drilling occupy a tiny surface space and tap a vast region, and can be baseload power as well as a peak power source.

There are a lot of other sources we aren't using right now. Petroleum refineries throw off a lot of waste heat, as do pulp mills, organic composting, server farms, volcanos, iron and aluminum and glass refineries. Any place there is a reliable significant thermal delta is an opportunity to reap electrical power, and the question is whether or not it can be done economically. As science progresses the delta and size of the installation becomes smaller. It's not as much "geothermal" as it is "thermal delta" electrical power.

There is no reason not to use both solar and geothermal to diminish our dependence on oil.

Nuclear works on thermal deltas too, but doesn't exploit them enough. Spent fuels, for example, heat their pools for a decade before they're considered "cool" enough to put into permanent storage (should any ever come available). That's a waste heat that's dissipated by evaporation (phase change) of water rather than claiming it as electrical power through modern energy capture technologies. Given modern technologies the spent fuel might give more electrical power than the reactor if it were exploited. I have issues with the whole "we don't have to take the trash out" mentality of nuclear proponents, but I have no problem with making the most of what they do.

We need to come to grips with the idea that "a big enough thermal delta is an electrical energy source." And then moderate the "Big enough" term with advances in technology. That's the ultimate recycling: finding utility for the thermal energy we are now throwing away.

New York Times reports higher revenue, stock jumps

(AP) ? The New York Times Co. stock rose sharply on Thursday after the media company reported that second-quarter revenue increased slightly.

Most of the revenue gain at the company, which publishes The New York Times and Boston Globe, stemmed from higher newspaper circulation, especially in its digital editions.

Revenue rose less than 1 percent to $515.2 million from $512 million. Analysts were expecting revenue of about $511 million. The last time the Times saw revenue grow was in the second quarter of 2010, when it increased by 1 percent to $589.6 million from $582.7 million.

The company's stock rose 75 cents, or 11 percent, to close at $7.80 on Thursday. The stock has traded between $5.50 and $8.92 in the past year.

Overall, the company said it lost $88.1 million, or 60 cents per share, in the April-June period, largely due to a one-time charge it made for the declining value of its About.com business. In the same period a year ago, the Times took a one-time charge to reflect the declining value of its regional newspaper division. It lost $119.7 million, or 81 cents.

The one-time charge amounted to $126.1 million, or 85 cents. Excluding the one-time charge and other items, the Times would have earned $21.5 million in the latest quarter.

Adjusted earnings were 14 cents per share in the latest quarter, up from 11 cents per share in the second quarter of 2011. Analysts, on average, were expecting adjusted earnings of 13 cents per share on revenue of $510.7 million, according to FactSet.

The company said strength in both print and digital newspaper circulation helped to offset advertising revenue declines.

Total company circulation revenue, which includes The New York Times, The Boston Globe and the International Herald Tribune, rose 8 percent. Circulation revenue at the company's flagship newspaper grew 11 percent.

The Times Co. continued to see growth in digital subscriptions, thanks to a so-called electronic paywall system it erected in March of 2011. Under the system, the Times charges readers for monthly access to an unlimited number of articles. The strategy, closely watched by executives in the industry, has helped to boost the Times' circulation and is being adopted at other newspapers. In April, the Times cut the number of articles readers can access for free from 20 to 10 per month.

At the end of June, the Times Co. had roughly 532,000 digital subscribers, a gain of 13 percent from the 472,000 it had March 18, 2012, which was the one-year anniversary of the company's digital subscription launch.

The Times Co. said that its advertising revenue decreased 7 percent to $244.3 million from $262.1 million and circulation revenue rose 8 percent to $233.3 million from $215.3 million. Revenue from other businesses such as commercial printing, news syndication and digital archives, increased 9 percent to $37.7 million from $34.5 million.

Revenue at the About Group declined 9 percent to $25.4 million in the second quarter. About.com offers users guides and other content on topics such as parenting, health care and cooking. Most of its users arrive at About's content through search engines.

The Times said About's ad revenue declined and said competition and the uncertain economy offset progress the company had made rebuilding About.com's sales team.

Chairman and CEO Arthur Sulzberger Jr. said that despite the accounting charge, the "About Group continues to execute on its turnaround strategy and we expect it to be on track to post continued meaningful improvement in the second half of the year."

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology.

DNP This is the Modem World So what's with the tech backlash thing

Just over a month ago, Apple launched its svelte new MacBook Pro with Retina display. Powerful and beautiful, we all fell in love with the new device, jammed up Apple's ordering process, and prepared to queue up for a hot new Mac all over again.

Then we woke a day later to a slew of realizations: the unit is hard to upgrade, software isn't optimized for the new display, and repairs will be expensive, if not impossible. Then we heard that some Retina screens were having color issues. So we rioted. We hated it for being limited, for not being the sexy woman she promised she was the night before.

How Video Games Can Help With Staying Fit

Staying healthy and eating right is not rocket science. This article will contain some easy information that will help you to make informed food choices. You?ll discover there are lots of easy steps you can take to ensure you?re eating nutritiously.

Foods with fat free labels may not be as healthy as they appear to be. Even if these foods are low fat, they probably contain more sugar than you should be eating. Scrutinize the food label with extra care if you are considering buying these foods.

TIP! Twice a week, enjoy fish instead of meat. This will make your diet much healthier.

Vegetables are important, low-calorie food choices, whether fresh, frozen or even canned. They are packed with vitamins and minerals that keep you healthy and satisfied. Be sure to eat several servings each day. You can include them in a fresh salad, or you can make a tasty pot of vegetable soup.

Make sure to use your caloric allowance to get as many nutrients into your body as you can. Calories are not created equal: 1,800 nutritious calories are not the same as 1,800 empty calories! You are what you eat, no matter how much.

Make sure your diet includes plenty of calcium. You can get calcuim from milk, vegetables, cheese, sardines, soya milk, dried beans, and nuts. This nutrient is vital for having healthy teeth and bones. A calcium deficient diet makes the body more susceptible to osteoporosis, a disease that is characterized by thinning bone tissues and loss of bone density. Osteoporosis, a very painful disease, gradually causes bones to become soft and brittle.

TIP! If you urine is dark yellow and comes with a very strong smell, you know that you are dehydrated. When you have drank enough water, it causes your urine to be lighter.

Fiber is a superfood. It helps to fight obesity and diabetes, and also heart disease and others. It is vital nutrition if you want to boast of a healthy lifestyle. The soluble type facilitates the expulsion of fat and cholesterol from the bloodstream, preventing damage from occurring. Women need a minimum of 20 grams of fiber every day; for men, 30 grams is required. The best source for fiber is a mix of fruits, whole grains and vegetables. However, if that is not possible, you can supplement your intake with OTC fiber pills.

Ice Cream

Buy a good blender to make delicious and nutritious fruit smoothies. You can then remove ice cream completely from your diet, and instead, enjoy tasty fruit smoothies. Blend fresh or frozen fruit, yogurt, honey, and a splash of milk to create a tasty beverage that can help you forget about high-fat ice cream and milkshakes.

TIP! Change your eating habit incrementally. If you aren?t used to eating a healthy diet, trying to do it all at once is likely to end in failure.

Moderation is important with even the healthiest foods. Portion control is a major part of dieting and losing weight. Eating huge portions always means you?re eating too many calories.

If you decide to eat eggs, try to cook just the whites and avoid the yolks. Egg yolks are, are high in fat and cholesterol, so eat the whites only. Substitute two egg whites for each whole egg.

Juicers can really help to give you the nutrients you need throughout the day. You can add to the overall nutrition and improve the taste of fruit juice by adding some vegetables to the mix. Try adding ginger to carrot apple juice for some zip. You can add spicy peppers to a juice blend for a great kick.

TIP! Huge amounts of people are crazy about coupons. No doubt you?ve seen TV broadcasts showing shoppers who score $100 or more in groceries for mere pennies on the dollar.

Eggs can provide the needed protein to keep your diet rich in nutrients; consider consuming a minimum of one egg daily. If you are watching your fat and cholesterol intake, take out the yolks of the eggs and use only the whites for your meals. The whites are where all the nutrients are. What?s more, they have no cholesterol or fat.

Try to gradually cut salt and sugar from your diet. By reducing it slowly, your taste buds can adjust and you?ll be fine not eating foods that are high in sugar and sodium. Using a slow approach to salt and sugar reduction will make it easier for you to accept these changes in your diet.

Eating Junk

TIP! When people think about nutrition, they tend to focus on food intake, ignoring the amount of liquid that they drink. Therefore, you should focus on the number of liquid calories going into your body.

Killing a junk food addiction will greatly assist you in improving the nutritional quality of your diet. A habit of eating junk food can leave a person accustomed to their convenience and taste. You can expect these cravings to rear their ugly head long after you have stopped eating junk food. It is crucial to acknowledge cravings for junk food and trade them in for enthusiasm for healthier choices.

Make sure you make time for breakfast. Breakfast is often forgotten due to busy morning schedules or a lack of desire to eat. Your day needs to start with proper nutrition, and that should include a good, well-rounded meal. You don?t want your day to start off bad by skipping this very important meal.

Switch your milk. You are going to get the exact same nutrients, no matter what type of milk you drink. By changing to a lower fat content, your body will feel better and still get nutrients.

TIP! A common mistake is taking for granted that your food choices are always healthy. Seven-grain bread may sound healthy and wholesome, but checking the label will reveal that it is not actually made from whole grains.

Reducing the quantity of food that you eat by a quarter can reduce your calories by 25% daily. Reducing portion size is an easy way to lower your food intake levels, and assist you in losing weight to improve your overall health.

Give your kids a healthier alternative by serving them baked potatoes in place of french fries. Cut it in half and decorate each half with peas, cherry tomatoes, and low-fat cheese to form a funny face on each side.

A change in meal preparation methods can have a great effect on the body?s nutrition. Instead of deep frying foods or using tons of grease when cooking, simply boil or steam the food. Doing this will eliminate a lot of fat off the foods. Choosing healthier cooking methods is a smart and easy way to cut unnecessary fat out of one?s diet.

TIP! You need to have riboflavin in your diet. Your body needs that to release the energy from protein, fat, and carbs.

You shouldn?t use multivitamins to outright replace foods. They should only supplement the things your diet is lacking. Whole foods are required for receiving the maximum possible nutrition. Do not overdo the use of a multivitamin; take only the minimum of what you need. Taking too many vitamins can cause an excess of certain vitamins in your body.

When you begin using the above tips in your daily life, you?ll find it easier to make nutritious choices without having to think much about it. Once you get the basics, it gets easier to incorporate good nutrition into your daily life. Good health to you!

Olmsted tries to clear up church stance on St. Joe's medical school

Thomas J. Olmsted, the bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix, issued a statement today clarifying the status of the new medical school at St. Joseph?s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.

Creighton University recently established a medical school at the St. Joseph?s campus, with 42 medical students beginning classes June 28.

Olmsted said there has been some confusion, since Creighton is a Catholic institution and St. Joseph?s is not.

?St. Joseph?s Hospital does not faithfully adhere to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services,? he said in his statement. ?Catholics, and all people of good will, are advised that they cannot be guaranteed authentic Catholic health care at St. Joseph?s Hospital.?

Lynne Reaves, spokeswoman for St. Joseph?s, said hospital officials will not comment on Olmsted?s statement, and instead referred the Phoenix Business Journal to its statement in December 2010 when Olmsted revoked his endorsement of the hospital as Catholic.

Olmsted?s stripping of Catholic status at the hospital followed months of complex talks between the Phoenix Diocese, the hospital, and the hospital?s parent company, Catholic Healthcare West (now Dignity Health). At issue is the life-saving care delivered to a pregnant patient in November 2009 at St. Joseph?s. In that case, a decision was made to terminate an 11-week pregnancy in order to save the mother?s life.

Hunt emphasized that the hospital will not change its name or its mission, which were both established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1895.

?St. Joseph?s will continue through our words and deeds to carry out the healing ministry of Jesus,? Hunt said. ?Our operations, policies, and procedures will not change.?

Feared regime forces assault Syrian capital

Feared forces led by President Bashar al-Assad's brother used helicopter gunships Sunday in a new assault on rebels in Damascus, activists said, as clashes also raged in Syria's second city Aleppo.

The Fourth Brigade headed by Maher al-Assad mounted an offensive in the Damascus neighbourhood of Barzeh, triggering an exodus of residents, as a rebel commander appeared in a video saying the battle to "liberate" Aleppo had begun.

"Regime forces are using helicopters to pound the Barzeh district," an activist who identified himself as Abu Omar told AFP via Skype.

"Families are trying to flee their homes, but it is difficult to get out of the neighbourhood. It is surrounded, and violence on the edges is intense," he said.

Abu Omar also said the army raided the nearby Rukn al-Din neighbourhood, while "helicopters used machineguns to fire into the district's streets."

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said "the feared Fourth Brigade" commanded by President Assad's powerful younger brother Maher was carrying out the Barzeh attack.

"Troops have stormed the northwestern Barzeh district of Damascus with tanks and armoured personnel carriers," the group's director Rami Abdel Rahman said, adding that snipers were deployed on rooftops.

The rebel Free Syrian Army's (FSA) military council head General Mustafa al-Sheikh told AFP "a real war of attrition" was underway in Damascus.

"The regime is collapsing, the speed at which it is falling has increased. That means it will use greater violence in order to try and save itself," said Sheikh.

The Observatory also warned that a siege was underway on the outskirts of the upscale Mazzeh neighbourhood, saying "dozens of tanks" were preventing medical teams from reaching scores of injured.

Nationwide, as many as 1,261 people were killed across Syria in the past seven days, three quarters of them civilians, the watchdog said.

The official SANA news agency announced that government forces had "cleansed" the capital's Qaboon neighbourhood of "terrorists," the regime's term for rebel fighters.

And state television aired footage reportedly from Qaboon showing dead bodies and weapons, communications equipment and money it said was captured from rebels.

It said some of the rebels killed held identity cards of Jordan and Egypt, accusing foreign countries of training and sending in insurgents.

But it denied helicopter gunships were being used inside the capital.

Residents in the city reported bread shortages, and the UN agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA expressed concern about the fate of residents of the Yarmuk camp in the city.

As battles continued in the capital, a rebel FSA commander declared that the battle to "liberate" the northern city of Aleppo had begun.

In a YouTube video, Colonel Abdel Jabbar Mohammad Oqaidi announced "the start of the operation to liberate Aleppo from the hands of Assad's gangs," while pledging that rebels would protect civilians, including the city's minorities.

Fierce clashes engulfed its Salaheddin and Sakhur districts, with an anti-regime activist saying the army began an assault at dawn. SANA said soldiers were "chasing down terrorists," adding that "many of them were killed."

In a new toll, the Observatory said that more than 19,000 people have been killed since the uprising against Assad's regime began in March 2011.

On Syria's borders, rebels battled troops for control of crossing posts with Turkey, Iraq and Jordan, as Turkey moved batteries of ground-to-air missiles to its frontier with the Arab state.

By Sunday afternoon, fighters were in control of three crossings with Turkey -- Bab al-Hawa, al-Salama and Jarabulus. They also controlled Albu Kamal post with Iraq but lost hold of Rabiyah on the same border a day after capturing it.

Fighting has intensified since a Wednesday bombing that killed national security chief General Hisham Ikhtiyar, Defence Minister General Daoud Rajha, Assad's brother-in-law Assef Shawkat and General Hassan Turkmani, head of the regime's crisis cell on the uprising.

With the violence escalating, more than 2,000 Syrians fled to Jordan early on Sunday, a prominent local charity in the neighbouring Arab state said, expecting a largescale influx.

Thousands of refugees have also crossed into neighbouring Lebanon and Turkey, where stone-throwing Syrians on Sunday clashed with police at two camps over a lack of food and water.
