Ditka was at a suburban Chicago country club playing cards on Friday when he noticed his hands "weren't working quite right," followed by trouble speaking.
The 73-year-old suffered a heart attack in 1988 while coaching the Bears, but hasn't had any major health issues in recent years.
Ditka currently serves as an NFL analyst for ESPN, but will not be working this weekend.
As a coach Ditka led Chicago to a Super Bowl win in 1988 and also served as the New Orleans Saints head coach for three seasons (1997-1999) before retiring with a 121-95 record. Ditka is one of only two men to win a Super Bowl as a player, assistant coach and head coach.
He won a Super Bowl as a player with the Cowboys in 1972.
Tom Flores also accomplished the feat with the Chiefs as a player and the Raiders as a coach.
