Thomas J. Olmsted, the bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix, issued a statement today clarifying the status of the new medical school at St. Joseph?s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.
Creighton University recently established a medical school at the St. Joseph?s campus, with 42 medical students beginning classes June 28.
Olmsted said there has been some confusion, since Creighton is a Catholic institution and St. Joseph?s is not.
?St. Joseph?s Hospital does not faithfully adhere to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services,? he said in his statement. ?Catholics, and all people of good will, are advised that they cannot be guaranteed authentic Catholic health care at St. Joseph?s Hospital.?
Lynne Reaves, spokeswoman for St. Joseph?s, said hospital officials will not comment on Olmsted?s statement, and instead referred the Phoenix Business Journal to its statement in December 2010 when Olmsted revoked his endorsement of the hospital as Catholic.
Olmsted?s stripping of Catholic status at the hospital followed months of complex talks between the Phoenix Diocese, the hospital, and the hospital?s parent company, Catholic Healthcare West (now Dignity Health). At issue is the life-saving care delivered to a pregnant patient in November 2009 at St. Joseph?s. In that case, a decision was made to terminate an 11-week pregnancy in order to save the mother?s life.
Hunt emphasized that the hospital will not change its name or its mission, which were both established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1895.
?St. Joseph?s will continue through our words and deeds to carry out the healing ministry of Jesus,? Hunt said. ?Our operations, policies, and procedures will not change.?
