Position Summary:

The Career Services Specialist position is a full-time employment opportunity. The Career Services Specialist will oversee delivery of services and resources through individual interactions, career library resources, and the use of technology and web-based tools. He or she will provide advice, guidance and resources to assist students and alumni of Ashford University with the career exploration and planning process. Through affiliation with national associations and state-based organizations and consortiums, the successful candidate will provide students with career counseling and internship/job search support as well as self directed, online career development and exploration tools. This role will assist with screening and assigning student to staff and resources as well as administrative support to student facing staff and managers.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Provide professional review and critique of students and alumni resumes; screen students and alumni referred to career services for best use of resources and disseminate information and referrals to appropriate staff members.
  • Provide professional guidance to currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate online students and first-year alumni which includes resume review and critiques; assessment; information on careers, occupation and employers; identification and clarification of personal values and goals; and decision-making via online resources.
  • Assist with daily operation and use of career services management system, online tools and resources and other technical components that deliver self directed services to students and alumni; maintain distribution lists to notify students/alumni of career opportunities and programs.
  • Administer intake procedures for students and alumni contacting career and alumni services.
  • Support administrative functions of career and alumni services teams.
Additional Job Duties (include but are not limited to):
  • Provide online computerized testing services to evaluate interests, skills, values, strengths and preferences; assist students and alumni in the use of online, self-directed resources for career planning.
  • Support the graduate tracking process in collaboration with Institutional Research and Academic Affairs to fulfill HEOA, DOE and other regulatory requirements; organize and maintain documentation filed on all graduates; responsible for the collection, compilation and analysis of graduate employment surveys (or other means of data collection) and employer data.
  • Foster student self-sufficiency and helps students learn to make maximum use of self service web based resources.
  • Plan, coordinate, and assist in the promotion and marketing of virtual and physical workshops and events that prepare job seekers for the job market.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:
  • 2+ years of progressively advanced experience in a related area of a post-secondary education environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of higher education administration subject matter and student development theory to act as a resource for the exploration of new ideas.
  • Knowledge of methods and procedures for seeking professional employment including but not limited to resume and cover letter formats, social networking, job search and interviewing; strong writing, proof reading, and editing skills.
  • Skill in creating a supportive work environment where new ideas are solicited, evaluated, and implemented. Collaborative, problem-solving, planning and organizational skills.
  • Strong oral, written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse population of students, faculty and employees in a predominantly online environment.
  • MS Office, student information system and or client relationship management software experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to interact with a diverse population of students, faculty and employees in a predominantly online environment.
  • Experience with strengths based career or academic advising methods helpful.
  • Ability to prioritize work, multi-task, set and meet deadlines.
  • Experience as a Career Advisor/Counselor or Academic Advisor or similar role in higher education or staffing.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree in career counseling, student affairs, educational administration or a related area preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee requires dexterity in using telephone, computer keyboard, mouse and calculator while seated at a desk. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk and sit. The employee may frequently move to interact with fellow employees and/or clients. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Communication Skills: While performing Duties of the job, the employee is required to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence and memos. The employee requires the ability to write effective and detailed correspondence and to effectively present information both in one-on-one and small group situations.

Mental Demands: While performing duties of this job, the employee is required to deal with stress associated with a fast-paced work environment and multiple priorities/tasks. The employee will be required to make judgment decisions and adapt to changing work situations, grasp and apply new ideas, communicate with various personalities at all levels and have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions.

Work Environment: While performing duties of this job, the employee is required to work in an office environment, and the noise level is usually quiet to moderate.
