Relationship ? Notre Dame Initiative on Spirituality in the Professions

?Noverim?Te, noverim me.?

St. Augustine

+ + +

The above Latin phrase uttered by St. Augustine means ?I would know Thee, in order to know myself.?

Such a significant statement ? containing truth that endures.? To know God is to know yourself, to know yourself is to know God.? But is not the primacy of knowing another?and being known by another encased in this a statement?

Are we not made for relationship - with God, with self and with others?? I?d say ?yes.?? And I ask: Is it not the case that a healthy relationship with another allows us to grow and see God more clearly at work in us and another, present in the world?? Does it not seem sensible to think that a God who desires relationship with us places an emphasis on relationship?? Is it not sensible to say that a Trinitarian God is anchored in the primacy of relationship?

Over the?years I have had a friendship with a dear person?and in the course of that friendship we have listened to one another, conferred about our past, our disappointments, ongoing growth and routine?challenges.? In doing so we have listened carefully and encouraged one another.? Over the years we have each grown and gained insight and understanding which has added to our contentment and wisdom.

To know another is to know self ? to know self is to know God.? Friendships like the one described prosper?because they reflect and confirm God?s presence in us and in one another and the world.? We do not make progress and grow in a vacuum ? but in relationship and all relationships bring us to God ? the Trinity ? to the core of all reality.

God bless.
